Conversations with the Inspiring Alicia Myers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Myers.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alicia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I modeled at my grandma’s church as a child and was told I had “a walk” (whatever that means when you’re eight years old, lol). I got into basketball and modeled off and on during college. I didn’t get serious about it until around age 27 when my best friend Shanáya Braxton suggested that we attend a model casting. I signed with an agency and put my all into modeling. As cliché as it sounds, I was inspired by Tyra Banks to get into modeling. I never missed an episode of America’s Next Top Model and I found myself soaking in all the tips she gave her models. What inspired me the most about Tyra is that she redefined the standards of beauty and she did it unapologetically. I also owe a huge part of my progress to my husband Corey Myers who took countless pictures of me to build my portfolio. After all, practice makes perfect, right?

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It takes time, confidence and persistence to build a rapport with others who are already established in this industry. When you are new, nobody takes you seriously. So, I have had to deal with rejection and resistance. But that honestly motivated me even more. In this industry, your look matters. Your look may not be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s ok. My advice to young women starting their journey is to not be afraid of rejection and learn to utilize the feedback you get from people with experience. It’s normal to have moments of insecurity but keep going and fight through it no matter what. Also, spread your wings as wide as you can. The more people you know, the more resources you will have.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m a model, creative director, and stylist (sometimes, I do hair as well). I’m probably known most for my creativity and posing. I’m most proud of the trust that has been instilled in me by my peers. With their trust, I’m able to create for them and set them up with bookings. I feel that my creativity and support of others is what sets me apart. I genuinely want to see others succeed. The best way I can help others is to gain as much experience and knowledge as possible.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Definitely! I grew up in a very strict military household and was mentally abused. I wouldn’t change a thing about my past because it taught me the resilience that I need to be successful as a model and as a member of corporate America. I learned how to be organized, timely and how to plan every detail because that is what was expected of me growing up. My childhood is a tough topic to discuss but as I grow older and closer to God, I definitely have learned to appreciate the cards I was dealt and I know that it could have been worse.
