Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Kulp.
Amanda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had a heightened desire to study art in high school, BUT I’m a logical thinker. I knew I was called to teach. I began pursuing my bachelor’s in Elementary Education.
I moved to Tulsa Oklahoma as a single mother with two children. I remember many times when my children were my saving grace. The pain of our choices often affect the people we love most. We started attending art events. I began following prominent and historical artists. I was completing my teaching internship when I met my husband. At the time he had two children and we decided to expand our family.
A couple years later we moved to Orlando, Florida. I graduated with my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction a year and a half later. I quickly realized that being in the educational system was going to be much more difficult than I anticipated if I desired to raise my children. I needed to teach my children a trade or a craft, as well as learn one myself! Within three years, we were a family of 9 with a wide range of needs.
I began Amanda Kulp Photography with the intent to capture authentic portraits, births, and events. This business was started to reach people that desire to capture the rare moments they experience.
A couple years ago we relocated to the Springs. I believe we were called here for many reasons, but my reason was my 97-year-old grandmother. The fact that it’s beautiful in Colorado made moving here one of the best things that has happened to my family.
We recently launched a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to building civic engagement about medical freedom by means of advocacy, education, and public policy.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
“The journey between what you once were and who you are now becoming is where the dance of life really takes place.” Barbara De Angelis
My journey in photography, education, and activism is consistently evolving. I find myself wanting to conquer every obstacle immediately knowing that all GREAT things take the investment of time, talent, and treasure.
One of the greatest obstacles has been the struggle between career and my family. My family will forever be my number one priority. I have to be patient with myself. ‘This is my journey,’ has become my mantra. There have been times while building the business that I have had to step away from photography to tend to my family or the launch of a project. I believe that this is the inherent struggle of being a mother for me, personally.
What should we know about Amanda Kulp Photography? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Amanda Kulp Photography was established to empower parents throughout the birthing process and beyond.
I am best known for my birthing and event photography. Being a doula, understanding the fundamentals of business, and the purpose of events enables me to be much better at understanding what needs to be captured.
As a brand, I am most proud of my ability to meet my clients where they are.
I thrive on building relationships. When I meet with a client I go to them and intentionally listen to their vision for the session.
I never want to make a client feel like their ideas or thoughts are not important.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
As a woman in a world dominated by men, women in the workforce is a frequent conversation in my home. I imagine my perspective relies heavily on my biological desire to tend to my children.
My choice was to raise my children BUT for many women they desire to be successful and strive to be the best at their chosen career. I will say, I always wanted to be a woman of wisdom and reverence.
I’ve found that by running my own business it has enabled me to establish my own hours and rules of operation.
I have taken my children to photoshoots, and my older children have assisted me. All of my children love photography and film, so this is a great way for me to teach them a trade or a craft and as someone who LOVES education this is how we choose to learn; student-led, project based learning!
