Conversations with the Inspiring Amy Anderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Anderson.

Amy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I learned to bake from my mother. She always baked everything from scratch and loved sharing her goodies with our whole community, spreading joy with each delicious treat she baked. I started baking more in college, making decorated cakes for birthdays and other special events, but it wasn’t until I made a cake for my niece’s first birthday that I really fell in love with decorating. Creating something unique and special for her, and getting to share it with all of our friends and family was magical. I was hooked! I started getting requests from friends, then acquaintances and then people I had no connection to at all. My side hustle kept growing and soon it became all I wanted to do. I quit my day job and created the Denver Cake Company.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The most difficult aspect of my journey has been learning how to navigate all of my new roles as a business owner. Overnight, I became a CEO, accountant, receptionist, marketing manager, photographer, delivery driver, and all of the other jobs it takes to run a small business. It can be overwhelming! When I encounter a situation that is new or something I don’t enjoy doing, I tell myself to breathe, then push through it. Accomplishing the tasks I don’t enjoy about running a business is what allows me to keep doing what I love.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Denver Cake Company story. Tell us more about the business.
At Denver Cake Co., I create custom cakes, cupcakes, and decorated cookies. It is my passion to create confections that are uniquely tailored to capture the essence of my clients’ events. Whether it is a wedding, birthday or baby shower, I love constructing a piece of art to make your celebration extraordinary.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
The majority of cake decorators are women, but when I think of the most famous and successful bakers I know, they are mostly men. I personally find being a champion of my own work to be difficult because I tend to be my harshest critic. It has really helped me to connect with other strong female leaders in the community. We all need to value our work, as well as support our fellow female entrepreneurs. Denver is full of bright, talented and driven female leaders, and I am honored to work alongside all of them.
