Today we’d like to introduce you to Audra Brehm.
Audra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2015 my husband (Brian) and I lived right outside of San Francisco with our 2-year-old daughter, Madysen. We had great corporate jobs and I got to commute by ferry each day into the city. From the outside, it seemed perfect. We had a great home, a wonderful marriage, and a sweet daughter, but we never saw each other. We started to realize that family time was much more important to us. We would play the “what can our money buy us in other cities” game. We would look at Zillow every night and find a new city that we would look at the type of homes we could afford. At the same time, I was starting to become unhappy in my job. I started on the side to help brands establish themselves on social media. Brian and I were wanting to start trying to have another baby and we decided that we should move to Denver.
Within three months, we quit our jobs, sold our house and moved out to beautiful Denver, Colorado. Brian had found a good sales job before we moved so we were not completely crazy, but at the same time I found out that I was pregnant with our second daughter, Rhylin. I always wanted to go back to work. I wish I could be a stay-at-home mom, but that is honestly the hardest job in the world. I tried it for three months on maternity leave with Madysen and realized after month 2 of being in my pajamas the whole time, I was not fit to do it. When you are pregnant, the last thing you want to do is go on a job interview, but an old colleague told me to go, so I did. When I got to the job interview, in the middle of interviewing me he said, “why don’t you own your own business?” I immediately said, “I have no idea.”
So, I went back home that night to tell Brian that I wanted to start a Digital Marketing Agency. At seven months pregnant Brehm Media was started. After almost five years, I have learned a lot, but mostly that I love what I do. Digital Marketing, specifically social media marketing is more than a passion. I am obsessed with making sure business owners, marketers, brands, and people see what is valuable about marketing and advertising to millions of people via social media. I love making sure our team teaches our clients and that we partner with each other. Brehm Media was built on the premise that no one is better than the other and we are here to help make the world a better place. We market for our clients to have their story shared because everyone deserves to have someone else hear their story.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Owning a business is never a smooth road if it was everyone would do it. In the past five years, I had my second daughter, went through my savings, lost my mother to breast cancer and made myself not feel sorry for every moment. Now… I pay myself (more than I thought), my husband is Brehm Media’s president (which means we establish our schedule), I get to spend more time with my kids and I am able to volunteer. Mostly I am able to tell women that are starting out that it gets better. There is a lot of hard work, tears, laughs and major workouts, but when you finally see the light at the end of the tunnel you get to run to it.
What should we know about Brehm Media? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Brehm Media is a digital marketing agency that specifically focuses on a sales funnel via social media for small to mid-sized businesses’ in health & wellness, beauty, and fashion industries. Each of our clients get a customized digital marketing approach. We create a full digital marketing strategy while making sure the content on social media is the first step in a brand’s sales funnel.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Digital Marketing is a boys club and it is very hard to establish yourself when normally the men make friends with who they want and keep them in their club. It is changing a lot, which is nice, but you will usually see men teaching at conferences, not women.
