Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Pearlman.
Beth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I practiced yoga regularly since moving to Colorado in 2000 and even dabbled in my college years in the 90’s, but it was when I was searching for change in my life that yoga really took root in me. I am a mom, and at that time had young children, but was ready for a career change. The change of identity brought on anxiety. It was at this time that yoga became a grounding force for me. Through dharma at the beginning of classes that spoke to me and slowing down to connect with movement and breath, I felt united to my life experience in ways I never had before. Yoga helped me move through life transitions more gracefully and unlocked the infinite possibilities of my world.
Yoga helps me to visualize and work toward the best possible version of myself. Once I knew what to look for, I started seeing it everywhere: where to improve, expand, reflect, and grow. Yoga, for me, is taking what you believe and living it.
In time, I began to incorporate meditation and more education into my life as a means of expanding my yoga practice. New possibilities presented themselves daily. I decided to take a yoga teacher training to deepen my own personal practice and see what happened. It was love! At that point, I started thinking about Evergreen and what a beautiful, amazing community we have here. I love knowing people and their experiences and wanted to create a place where people could come together to breathe, move and feel safe. My True Yoga vision began to crystallize with the support of my husband, Josh, and the vision became a reality in March of 2013: True Yoga – Where Heart and Body Connect.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing is ever perfectly smooth. Transitions shake you and I never want to take any little successes or great successes for granted. Opening a small business is not easy but the rewards are worthwhile. When someone tells me they got through death, divorce, sickness, business deals, change and other life challenges because of yoga and the community, I know I am in the right place doing exactly what I should be doing. My advice…follow your heart and listen to that voice. If the heart is in opening a small business, think it through: money, time, lifestyle…what do you want to provide and what do you want out of it? Small business needs your presence – to give it heart and so much more!
What should we know about True Yoga? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I love the practice, the people, the stories, the diversity- I’m passionate about it all! I am incredibly proud of all the amazing teachers we have at True Yoga and their commitment to people, community and their healing. Each instructor shares her or his wisdom and love with all of their students in such a unique way. I am honored to know and work with them all! True Yoga provides a wide variety in styles of yoga with 20 plus fantastic instructors and 38 classes a week. That certainly makes us unique in our mountain community.
At True Yoga, we collaborate and create many events to bring different parts of the community together. A few times a year, we have Flo-Ga (a blacklight yoga class), where we put on body paint, glow, play fun music and move with a lot of playfulness. We partner with a local restaurant/ bar where a gathering takes place after. We have an outdoor yoga class, Pints and Poses, where we collaborate with another local restaurant on their deck. True Yoga hosts a concert series of yoga classes, clothing swaps, live music classes and so much more!
I am incredibly proud of the annual yoga retreat in Tulum I co-created with my partner Shelly. The retreats continue to grow and exceed expectations. This is something we plan to grow and expand on, as this annual retreat is always an experience to look forward to. Each year it is beautiful, different and transformational in its own way.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
There are so many things to list, I am not sure where to begin. I love the self-work and knowledge that comes from the Enneagram. It helps me to be more aware of my light and my dark, where to pause and how to follow through. For me, the Enneagram reinforces the concept of human connection and that no personality type is inherently better or worse. We move through life to work towards our best self: this just comes through different lenses.
All of Judith Lasater’s books on yoga continue to inspire me. You should see my original copy of “Relax and Renew”. It certainly looks used!
Workshops and Trainings: I can go on and on with some of my most inspirational yoga teachers and influencers: Desi Springer, John Friend, Janet Stone, Seane Corne, Desiree Rumbaugh and so many more!
And…I am always inspired by anything Brene Brown writes. I love her messages of embracing imperfection, vulnerability, connection and leadership.
