Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Keller.
Carly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started Christmas Day 2016 with my Etsy shop, Oh My Custom Designs. I just moved from Oklahoma, where I worked full time in marketing, and finally had a chance to pursue my own dreams. I started making bridal party gifts and personalized wedding décor, which led me into sourcing décor and styling for my own wedding in September 2017. The day after our backyard wedding, the caterer posted pictures, and one of their followers reached out. Like many couples, they had the vision and everything planned, but nobody to see it through the day of their wedding. That’s when Oh My Custom Designs started offering décor rentals, venue styling, and coordination for elopements and weddings. Last season, we styled and coordinated 12 weddings in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and are currently in the midst of a very busy 2019.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
“What is meant to be, will be” has always given me peace with my decisions in my business and personal life. With owning your own business, there is always something that could be done, but not everything is going to be a good fit for you. There are many individuals I admire and follow in the wedding industry and sometimes I just love what they are doing. There are times when I think “Hey, I should do that!” but then, I have to remind myself not everything is going to be best for Oh My Custom Designs.
My advice: Be confident but also know your limitations. Don’t take on projects that don’t align with your business and vision.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in intimate weddings in the Rocky Mountains that have a rustic, laid back vibe. Every wedding is different so I offer a variety of packages to cover those who need décor rentals, those who need venue styling, and also those who need help managing vendors.
The main thing that sets us apart is including all décor with our styling and coordination packages! I’m talking welcome signs, ceremony decor, centerpieces, DIY bar and cake setups, etc. The whole shebang! Most of the couples I work with only by a guest book. I bring the rest (even the candles)! Its all personalized in house, so everything coordinates.
Grand Lake and Estes Park are the areas I am booked most often. I was married in Grand Lake myself, and will most likely retire there. Needless to say, it’s my absolute favorite place.
One venue I’m super stoked about this season: The Stanley!
Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
Manda with Mae&Co (IG maeandco_creative) is someone I follow and look up to. She is a constant source of inspiration and travels all over the world doing what she loves. Not only is her work phenomenal, but she also hosts events to help other wedding vendors on the business end, with tips and tricks that have helped me get to where I am now. I hope to make it to one of her workshops one day (it’s on my business bucket list)!
