Conversations with the Inspiring Chelsea Ellis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Ellis.

Chelsea, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always enjoyed creating. Painting, playing the violin, writing, sewing, styling, and on and on. I was often inspired by images I’d seen traveling, and just living life. And when I was inspired, I wanted to create something to inspire OTHERS as well. When I had my first set of twins, my world was turned upside down, and while it was in the best way possible, I felt like Alice in Wonderland. Navigating motherhood, and who I was supposed to be NOW, was foreign. In hindsight, I now see that I went through a sort of mourning period of the “me” that seemed to be slipping away. While I was and am so proud of the family I have cultivated with my husband, I realized that it was the best thing for me, not as a mother, but as a person, to be involved in something that was mine. By taking some time to do something I have always loved, blogging, I began to value my time with my kids more. All areas of my life began to fill with color. I love waking up in the morning and feeling so much purpose, I have four wonderful children that are at this age, still reliant on, and look up to their mom. I hope to show them that while they are my priority, I have other things cooking. That I am out in the mix, being inspired, and ideally, lifting and inspiring others as well. I want to instill in them, what it has taken some time for me to find: It’s okay-no, it’s WONDERFUL to be multi-faceting. Don’t feel tied to any label. In a world filled with so much worry and uncertainty, I want my kids to say “Dang-Mom is strong! I can be strong too!”

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was always taught that without the rain, we wouldn’t know to appreciate the sun. That being said, my life, probably like most, has had its fair share of struggles. A challenge I think I will always be working through is the whole mom-guilt conversation in my head. “Did I spend enough quality time with all four kids today to justify taking this time to plan my post or fill-in-the-blank.” What I’ve come to terms with, is that I need to get out of my own way. I spent the majority of my life listening to a little voice in my head telling me “I shouldn’t” or why “I couldn’t” take leaps to follow my wildest dreams, so I didn’t bother take any steps at all in many cases. My advice is to throw away your perception of yourself. Stop telling yourself what you are NOT capable of and just take one step at a time towards just one dream. If you want to see real change in your life, you’ve got to shake up how you approach your life TODAY! You are worth it.

What should we know about Style at a Mile? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What gets me out of bed every morning, other than four little lovable monsters at my feet, are the endless possibilities of creating…creating inspiring images, writing that makes someone laugh, a space that makes my family feel they are “home”. I have a merchandising background, and really enjoying designing my life, in all aspects! I think those closest to me know they can count on help picking an outfit out for an event while telling an outrageous story to entertain them. It’s seriously such a joy for me! I am proud of the fact that while I am not doing any one thing anywhere near perfectly- I am juggling different things that are helping me grow as a person, and giving me purpose.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
I’m lucky to be surrounded by so many wonderful women! In my mom, I learned love of family and endless generosity. I’ve always admired the free-spirit and pure sunshine that is Goldie Hawn. I love the confident and warm mix that Jennifer Aniston has always exuded. And honestly, my daughters inspire me! From the moment I watched them fighting for their lives and persevering at ONE POUND I saw the strong cloth we are all cut from. All of these women are intelligent and live life unapologetically, and I can only hope to do the same!
