Conversations with the Inspiring Denise Sanchez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Sanchez.

Denise, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started in the beauty industry about 12 years ago, doing makeup for weddings and freelance events. I loved it so much I decided to get my license to do everything. I went to school at Aveda in Las Vegas. I fell in love with the industry even more. When I moved back to Denver, I went to work for Aveda and European Wax Center. I knew I wanted to have my own salon, so I saved every penny possible and worked so many long hours. It paid off! In 2014, I started Wax and Beauty Bar. I have had the wonderful pleasure of growing it with some of the most talented people in the industry and of course, the BEST clients.

Has it been a smooth road?
Owning and starting your own business is not for those looking for a smooth road. It takes a lot of persistence, determination and the ability to get back up over and over again. One of the biggest struggles for me was finding space and making it workable for my business. My advice for all women on this journey is to find someone who has been successful at starting their own business (doesn’t have to be the same industry) and ask their story. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions. There are so many great women out there that would love to help.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Wax and Beauty Bar story. Tell us more about the business.
At Wax and Beauty Bar, we specialize in full body and facial waxing, as well as hair, eyelash extensions, and makeup. Our only goal is to make sure that every client that walks out our door feels fabulous and beautiful. As an organization, I am most proud of my team. They are an incredible team of men and women with so much pride in what they do. Every single one has worked really hard to be the best in their craft. There are many great salons in Denver, but I think what sets us apart is our expertise and dedication to the very best experience for our guests.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Women need to band together. We are a sisterhood that needs to support and empower each other, not be threatened or afraid to help the next person. It is hard enough to accomplish success in business or careers, but if you have a great tribe behind you – the sky is the limit. Find your confidence and be sure of who you are. You are capable and a star, don’t feel like you need to diminish your shine to be liked.
