Conversations with the Inspiring Dr. Lisa Amerine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Lisa Amerine.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have loved medicine, in particular, homeopathy since I was a little girl. By the age of ten, if you needed one of the three homeopathic medicines I knew the indications for, I was sure to give it to you whether you wanted it or not. Then, as a teenager, I discovered the importance of nutrition and exercise, I was hooked and began researching as much as I possibly could. I knew I wanted a career in medicine, in particular, natural medicine, that included a focus on lifestyle and homeopathy.

As I was investigating medical schools, I discovered naturopathic medical schools, you still had the same foundation as any other medical student, however, instead of limiting our scope to pharmaceutical drugs and surgeries a naturopathic doctor was also trained in many natural modalities of medicine. The philosophy of a naturopathic medical school was to find the root cause and to stimulate the body to heal from the inside out. Once I discovered that I could get a good medical education and be trained in natural medicine, I never looked back.

After completing my undergraduate degree in Human Nutrition and Health Sciences from Colorado State University, I attended Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona. My husband and I chose to return to Colorado following my graduation as we are both native and our families live here. In 2004, I founded my clinic, Pure Center of Health (at the time Pure Homeopathy) in Lafayette, CO. I built this practice from the ground up, starting out with just myself. I did it all- medicine, reception, marketing, janitorial. Business ownership is not for the faint of heart, however, I would never do anything different.

As my success grew, so did the clinic. Over the years I have added other health care providers and today, 15 years into this journey, my team consists of two Registered Nurses, a Certified Health Coach, a Nurse Practitioner, and another Naturopathic Doctor. It is a blessing beyond belief for patients to entrust their health care in our hands and a huge honor to see people get better.

Has it been a smooth road?
Over the years, I have had many struggles, some harder than others. I have faced some very scary financial times. I have had to navigate work-life balance attempting to own a business, be a wife, as well as a mom.

The struggle that has been the most threatening to my business is burn out. I work hard all day in the clinic 4-5 days per week, then come home to my family where life is equally as busy. I love both more than words can say, but I have learned that if I am on the go too much and don’t take a day to rest and be at home with nothing on my calendar including household maintenance I get exhausted. This can really wipe me out and take weeks to recover. To help prevent burn I have had to learn boundaries, something that does not come naturally to me. I have had to learn to build in time of rest and every once and a while when I seem to be in a season of going “moch ten with my hair on fire” I have to be reminded again about the importance of rest. The value of rest each week is just as equal as the work you have to do to make sure your business brings in money. Without rest you will burn out quickly, this leads to mistakes that can tear down all of your hard work in an instant. Another piece of advice I have is to be sure to have things you enjoy doing outside of work that refill your cup. This may be exercise, journaling, prayer, meditation, reading a good book at a coffee shop but it is so important that you know what feeds your heart and soul so when you are tired you can be refilled.

In my desk, I have a box that I pull out from time to time to keep me inspired. It contains my why. It has cards that patients and loved ones have mailed me along the way as well as quotes and some of my favorite scripture verses. My brother (who is NOT the card giving type) sent me a card one time of a giant barbell with huge weights on the end with a little tiny mouse holding on for dear life saying, “It may not always be easy… but I know you will make it” That card means more to me than he will ever know. If I am having a day that is hard, for whatever reason, I pull that box out and look through it quickly. I am instantly reminded why I do what I do. The journey is fun and I encourage you to enjoy it, all of it!

Use every challenging situation as a springboard to learn and grow. Never beat yourself up over mistakes you may have made, but instead be thankful for them. Let them mold you into a stronger person. Do not go down the “what if” slide. It does nothing but torture you. Have your plan, be prepared, but do not allow yourself to worry about what tomorrow will bring. Tomorrow will have its challenges for sure, but every day in your path has prepared you for the next step. You will be prepared for the challenges that come, trust that process. If you stay present in the moment each challenge is much easier to overcome. Have fun! You were made to do this!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Pure Center of Health story. Tell us more about it.

We are truly passionate about what we do and compassionate with the people we serve. When doctors listen to the laws of nature and are guided by them, the health of our patients will be restored. Remember, we are designed to heal from the inside out. Dr. Amerine and her team does this by systematically applying the fundamental principles of naturopathic medicine. Our team helps people of all ages and levels of wellness achieve more vibrant health. We are passionate about prevention, but we also are known to take on challenging cases. Our team has developed a reputation for helping patients with some of the most advanced chronic illnesses.

I am one of very few doctors in the country who have achieved Diplomate status with the Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians (DHANP). This is a huge honor and is not awarded to just any doctor. This status reflects my years of training and hours of hard work. It is this expertise in medicine that truly sets me apart from any other doctor in Colorado.

I also am working with a team of international experts to co-author the “Materia Medica Pura Project,” a several-thousand-hour project to advance Homeopathy around the world. I also teach and speak both locally as well as internationally on topics related to Homeopathic medicine and health.
