Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellyse Colson.
Ellyse, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Last May, while on maternity leave with my second baby, I was struggling with the idea of going back to work. It was at that moment, I came across a webinar about this online world- virtual assisting. This was something I’d never heard of before and was intrigued. After doing some of my own research, I decided to jump in feet first to go through an online course that would ultimately change my life.
The Free Mama Movement walked me through all of the important steps in creating my freelancing business and really honing in on my skill set. From there, Blue Spruce Virtual Administrative Solutions was born. I am a naturally organized person and insanely productive. These two skill sets allow me to provide my clients with assistance to take on their mundane tasks and implement systems so they can run their businesses more efficiently.
My journey was rocky for a while- working with clients who didn’t respect and appreciate the value I brought to their company or trying to do tasks that are not in my wheelhouse. Once I discovered who my ideal client was and the different type of work I’m good at, everything started to fall into place.
I love working with female coaches (life, business, marketing, etc.) by taking on their mundane tasks so they can gain back time to dedicate to their missions. We all work hard; no one should have to do it alone.
Has it been a smooth road?
By no means has it been a smooth road. I have found, though, in life, if something is challenging and you can stick with it, you will come out a stronger person on the other side.
When you first start off in the online entrepreneurial world, the only thing you want to do is land that first client and you’re so afraid to find your true niche in fear of alienating others. The thing that eventually got me, though, was working with a client and having a completely awful experience. I learned the type of people I wasn’t willing to work with and who I really did want to work with!
Starting a business does so much for self-discovery. I have learned more about who I am and what I want from my life because I am the one in charge of what happens in my business and what does not.
For me, there has never been an option to quit or to fail. That mentality alone has allowed me to keep going even when there were no clients in sight and I wasn’t sure if this was going to work out. I simply told myself that I was going to keep going until it did. If you are someone with a dream to do something or start something, do it. No one is going to want your dreams as badly as you do and no one else can make them happen. Be you. People buy from people- not businesses.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Blue Spruce Virtual Administrative Solutions story. Tell us more about it.
I am a well-organized, highly-productive person. This is something I am finding more and more is not something that comes naturally to everyone, but is so important to doing business. I help my clients do so many different things, but some include: managing social media platforms, creating and repurposing content, email marketing, and helping to manage/prioritize the tasks that need to be done. I firmly believe that businesses run best with systems- I can help create those and even run them.
Working with my clients, because of the nature of their work, I am constantly inspired to be my best self and really trust who I am and what I do. When you hire someone to take on any part of your business, it is so much more about the relationship than the skill set. Skills can be learned; relationships can’t.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
My parents have always encouraged me to follow my dreams and make them happen. I am also an intrinsically motivated person, so anytime I’ve ever wanted something, I go for it.
Honestly, when I was growing up, I always wanted to be a teacher and this entrepreneurial world wasn’t even on my radar. I was a teacher, then an administrator, then the director of academics. All of that was great and I have a great passion for education, but as much as I love that world, I love my children more. I needed to find a way to make the dream of being a mom a full-time gig instead of only giving them the drained, leftover energy I had left.
