Conversations with the Inspiring Emily Behnke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Behnke.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Emily. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a Denver based artist + photographer; Owner of Emily Elizabeth Photography.

My photography journey has been happening behind the scenes my whole life. It used to be just a hobby: an element I could contribute to my graphic design & marketing. It wasn’t until I decided to pack up my small-town life in Wisconsin, and move across the country to Colorado; that’s when things started to happen. That is when my life began. That’s when this fun hobby really started to see it’s a spotlight.

I started my professional career by shooting for a local clothing company. I did everything from product photography to lifestyle look book shoots. As I picked up momentum with this new medium, I found a new space for my artistic release. I started to look in all directions for my next photographic adventure. I’ve gotten the chance to shoot for some really amazing brands and work with some really freakin’ cool companies.

Shooting fashion is defiantly my favorite. I love all of the fabrics, textures, colors, and shapes. My creative mind runs wild when I get to work with these unique clothing companies to capture their pieces in a way that will excite the masses . My style is bright, colorful and wild; giving a vivid life to every image I capture!

My newest venture is wedding photography and I absolutely love it. To have the opportunity to capture the biggest day of people’s lives is an exhilarating feeling! Capturing such pure and raw emotions brings me so much joy. I love all the small details to go into such a big day from the table settings to the beautiful embellishments on a bride’s dress. Doing this feels like I never have to work another day in my life and I feel so blessed that the universe and all of my lovely couples support me to follow my dreams in this way!
I’m not sure where this photo journey will take me next but I am so excited to be here for it!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
You have to put yourself out there. You have to put in the time, the sweat, the tears. You need to show dedication to the art. Like anything – practice makes perfect and the more you invest into yourself and whatever it is you are trying to accomplish, the better the chances of your success.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Emily Elizabeth Photography story. Tell us more about it.
My cup of tea is fashion photography. I absolutely love shooting anything fashion related. And I think for a lot of the same reasons, I also really love to photograph weddings.

I’ve also done some really cool work for local CBD companies, some local painters, and glass blowers. Nightlife photography is something I dabble in as well. I love to attend events, concerts, and music festivals. I’ve shot small local events from galleries to beer tastings. And I’ve had the opportunity to photograph at some really amazing festivals like Electric Forest, Sonic Bloom, and ARISE.

I think what sets me apart from other photographers is my strong draw to color, lots of it, and dramatizing what is being seen – maybe even pushing the envelope more than others might feel comfortable doing. I like to push the limits.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I think the biggest barrier to female leadership is finding your own voice. It takes time, patience, and experience but once you find your voice – don’t let anyone take that from you. Be unapologetically you.

Emily is an amazing talent with an eye for seeing things that make her photographic compositions really sophisticated art. Surrounded by nature, architecture, or fashion she is in her element, and her happy zone. Easy to work with and great attention given to her clients. Glad I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with her before someone recognizes her talent and sweeps her away to Paris. Love, love love!!
