Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Linehan and Crystal Hines.
Crystal Hines and Erin Linehan met while working in a Community Mental Health Center on the School-based team. The beginning of our relationship was less than smooth! We both had strong feelings of dislike for each other. Crystal felt like Erin was “too much,” and Erin felt like Crystal was “too rigid.” For those of you who know the Myer’s Briggs, Crystal is an INTJ and Erin is an ESFP- total opposites! As the years progressed, we slowly warmed-up with each other. Our mutual respect for clinical competency and authentic presence in the world started to win each other over. Through respect and a slow build of friendship, we realized that we both shared the same vision of owning a group therapy practice and wellness center.
We hired a business coach for two years to make sure we could work together given our differences. The two years turned into the most important foundational start to our business. We often joke that our business coach was really our ‘premarital’ business coach. Through our foundational work, we realized that our differences complemented each other in a beautiful and powerful way. Hence the Kali Institute was founded in June of 2017.
We had a hard time choosing our name and finally settled on The Kali Institute. After hours of searching and consuming lots of caffeine, we discovered the Hindu Goddess, Kali. Kali is all about destruction and rebirth, finding life out of death, and thriving through hardships. Kali is a great metaphor for the powerful transformation our therapy provides.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road for us hasn’t been smooth, but it has been an incredible ride. For us, learning to love the process rather than focusing on the outcome has been one of the keys to finding joy in our business. The shift to focusing on the process has been huge because we had to learn about the business ins and outs with the mind of therapists. Generally speaking, therapists are terrible at marketing and just assume that clients will come when you open the door. We had to struggle through learning to stop only talking about our clinical credentials and experience, and be more authentic about who we are as women, and how we can actually help people to feel better! Now, we love the entrepreneur mindset and embrace both the clinical and business side of running a group practice.
Advice for other women is to invest in yourself; the more energy, time, resources one puts toward personal development and healing old wounds, the more it will pay off in the long term. For us, we were surprised at how much our unprocessed stuff came up when we became entrepreneurs. Our blocks around money and value the work we do, being vulnerable and authentic to the public, and working through our own imposter syndrome were some of our biggest lessons. We have learned that our worth is not tied to productivity, and being vulnerable is so worth the confidence gained from showing up and standing in our truth.
What should we know about The Kali Institute? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a Counseling and Wellness practice that helps high achieving individuals to access their best lives and joyful release their inner badass. We are creating a paradigm shift within mental health therapy and counseling in Colorado by focusing on maximizing an individual’s unique potential, rather than focusing on a place of deficit. Individuals who seek us, see themselves as high achievers, go-getters, strivers, and trailblazers. These individuals are willing to lean into the work to become the best version of themselves. They are ready for life-changing results and understand that working with a counselor can be an important path for getting there.
We take a brain, body, heart approach to wellness and vitality that is rooted in science and research. We specialize in EMDR therapy, Peak Performance EMDR, Healing Touch Energy Medicine, Yoga, Internal Family Systems, Massage, Acupuncture, and Consultation/Supervision for therapists.
Erin loves doing intensive integrated work using EMDR therapy and Healing Touch Energy Medicine to go deep with clients to create lasting and powerful change.
Crystal is passionate about integrating yoga into therapy and loves to facilitate Therapeutic Yoga Groups for Women, and Tweens.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I (Erin) have found that reaching out directly to people who inspire me and I want to learn from, has been the most important factor in finding the right mentors. And remember that these relationships, like any, take time and care to nurture and grow.
I (Crystal) generally find people that I have professional or personal interests in common, and then I dedicate time each week to meet with the people that feel energizing to me. I love to hear what other therapists and healing professionals are passionate about and creating within their businesses. It’s important, especially in the therapy field, for other therapists to support each other personally and professionally.
