Conversations with the Inspiring Falyn DeForest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Falyn DeForest.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started photography for pure enjoyment. I’ve always been a creative person, but photography came to be my passion when my husband bought me a camera for one of our anniversaries a few years ago. I started photographing my daughter and landscapes, as those were my favorite subjects to document. As I started posting more photos and expanding my skills better, I had more and more people reaching out to me asking me to capture special moments for them. It wasn’t until the beginning of 2019 when I realized I could really make a business out of this burning passion I have inside of me. Social media, word of mouth, family support, and taking a chance on myself is how I’ve grown my business throughout the past year.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a creative person, I think we are always our worst critics. Self-doubt can rule your life if you never learn to take a chance on yourself. I always thought I wasn’t good enough because I didn’t know EVERYTHING there was to know about photography. I’m a perfectionist, so if something didn’t feel like it was 110% my best, I didn’t think it was good enough. But what I’ve learned is nobody knows everything. We’re all trying to figure life out as we go. So if we don’t start right now, with what we know and what we have we will just hold ourselves back that much longer. Also, having people around you to support you and cheer you on can be a world of difference. I have family and friends that believe in me and what I’m doing and push me further towards success when I’m doubtful.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer who loves to create. I love capturing all of the candid moments between couples, families, or even just a single person. Although going to beautiful locations is always a great part of what I experience, I love setting my subjects up for candid moments. And I love details as well. The shots not everyone else will necessarily see in between those moments. I take pride in knowing my equipment, my subjects, and delivering beautiful emotions in our photos. My work is an earthy warm vibe and kind of moody.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
My parents are one of the biggest contributors to set me up for success throughout my whole life. They lead by example. The best way I can describe my parents is supportive, humble, and extremely hard working. They never told me I couldn’t do anything. Any idea I had, whether they agreed with it or not, let me decide what I wanted to do with my life and supported my decisions. They let me decide what I wanted my life to be, with trial and error of course. I think the best way to learn experience. Good and bad!
