Conversations with the Inspiring Jessica Dismuke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Dismuke.

Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my passion for skin care when I was a little kid. I always loved making homemade scrubs and masks and enjoyed doing mini facials on my friends. When high school came around I decided to sign up for the Esthetic’s class at Warren Tech for my junior year. Once I started the program I knew this was going to be my career path. My senior year I was able to do a program to get my required classes to graduate and was able to work in a spa and start getting experience in the skin care field. When I was 19 I had the opportunity to open up my own business and I took it! My parents played a big part in helping me get off my feet and get my career started. It took a lot of hard work as a young entrepreneur to have the confidence in myself to start my own business, and also for my clientele to recognize and trust that I truly knew my trade. Evergreen was a great place to grow my business because word of mouth was my best advertisement. I’ve had my business a little over ten years now. By being consistent and having a friendly relationship with my clients has tremendously helped me build my business.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting your own business definitely has its ups and downs in the beginning. I struggled the most throughout my first three years of starting Healthy Glow as I was trying to build a solid clientele. I started my business at Nicks’s Pro Fitness in Evergreen which, was a huge help because it allowed me to meet a lot  of people right away. As an entrepreneur, you definitely have to market yourself and put yourself out there which can be scary at first! But what helped me at the time was attending some of the workout classes at Nick’s so I was able to meet local women that would be potential clients. I was very nervous at first and wanted to exude confidence in my line of work. Getting up the courage to talk to women that were older than me was intimidating at first, but when I did I saw how many women wanted to support my line of work. Once I was comfortable talking to my potential clients I then began running monthly raffles and specials for my skincare services to draw in more interest. It was financially challenging offering these specials for awhile, but I was able to push through and eventually reach moderately success. The beginning struggles of starting a business are really trying, but continuing on no matter what is what makes you stronger as a business owner. 

What should we know about Healthy Glow- Osmosis Skin Care? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Healthy Glow is an all natural business that focus’s on making people’s skin look beautiful without injections or any harsh chemicals. I offer a variety of treatments specializing in facials, microdermabrasion, hydrodermabrasion, natural peels, Microcurrent therapy, all waxing, lash and brow tinting. The products I use for my practice comes from a local Evergreen company. Osmosis Skin Care. This corrective skincare line is rooted in real, all natural ingredients. All of the products used during my treatments are also available for sale to my clients. I pride myself on how I make women feel and look when they leave my office. Every facial treatment includes a relaxing hand, arm, neck and shoulder massage. I firmly believe in staying present with my clients, making sure they are getting pampered the entire time! My goal with all clients is not to only help them with any skin issues they may have, but also to give them a calming space to fully relax. To me skin care should not always be intimidating or painful, you should not have to leave red or irritated to get great results. I like my clients to be able to leave my office with tight glowing skin and not have any downtime! 

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
The most important piece of advice I’d share with a young women starting their own business is not to give up when it gets hard. I’ve seen many people give up on their passion of opening a business because the clients weren’t coming as easy as they thought. For me, talking to other small business owners and hearing that they went through similar struggles really helped me and gave me added strength and belief that I could get through those hard times myself. If you know your trade and are consistent it will show through to your clients and will keep them coming back.
