Conversations with the Inspiring Jessie Golden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Golden.

Jessie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a Mind-Body Health Coach, and I decided to pursue this passion and career after overcoming my own issues with food & body obsession from the age of 16 through my mid-20s. Beginning in high school, after receiving a comment about my weight from a family member (I was not remotely overweight, mind you!), I was advised to go on a low carb diet. This, coupled with intense exercise every day, led to rapid weight loss, but the accolades I received from others poured in even more quickly.

At this point, I drew the connection between my self-worth and my body. “Everyone seems to like me better when I’m leaner, so they must not have liked me before. I have to make sure I keep this up!”

I couldn’t, of course, as the regimen was impossibly unsustainable! I was miserable, not to mention completed uninformed about what was actually healthy for my mind and body. However, it was a cycle I just couldn’t seem to find my way out of. I felt completely trapped by the diet rules – hopping from one trend to the next – and I couldn’t stop thinking about food and my body every second of every day.

It wasn’t until I went backpacking abroad in Southeast Asia with a few girlfriends in 2014 that I started to really look at my internal world. I didn’t even know that was possible! Thanks to meditation and SEVERAL personal development books, I began looking at the real source of my issues. Let me tell you, it had nothing to do with the food! It had everything to do with the avoidance of my inner turmoil, the inability to cope with emotions, and the lack of tools to manage the thoughts in my head.

On top of all of that, I was more confused than ever regarding what was *actually* healthy for my body. I had completely lost touch with it!

After a few years of dedicating myself to living a life without rules and restriction, I decided to help other women overcome the same confusion, lack of connection, and obsession. After studying at the Institute for the Psychology of Eating and obtaining my Precision Nutrition Level One certification, I started coaching women one-on-one as part of my online (remote) coaching program.

I continue to serve women via online coaching in a group coaching format through my signature program, Food Freedom Evolution!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I started my business while working my full-time corporate job in 2017, and I took the leap fully with my own business in April 2019. It has been a journey filled with a LOT of learning, patience, and perseverance, but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

I spent much of my first year focused on the wrong part of my business (i.e. blog posts, ineffective copywriting and marketing), and it wasn’t until I invested in a business coach that my business took off. I’m grateful for the time I spent figuring things out on my own, but I’m even more grateful for the guidance I sought out and the subsequent knowledge I gained!

My biggest advice is to start taking messy action right away. The reality is that no one really knows what they’re doing when they start a business, and what separates the successful from the unsuccessful is the resilience to continue learning and evolving while continuing to take action. Action over everything!

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I coach women on improving their relationships with food, and it starts with building a foundation of strong self-respect and high self-worth. From there, we navigate de-coding their bodies and unlearning diet rules to develop airtight relationships with their bodies signals. However, it’s worth noting that you can absolutely have goals at the same time! Wanting to be healthy and fit can absolutely co-exist with a positive and empowering relationship with food and body.

I’m most proud of my unique approach to health and fitness, as it focused on the intentions behind the actions first and foremost. As I always say, “I don’t care what you’re doing, I care why you’re doing it.” I truly believe this is the missing piece with most of the coaching programs and advice in the market. Without nailing this piece of the puzzle, it’s simply unsustainable and unenjoyable!

My signature group coaching program, Food Freedom Evolution, is a 12-week program that takes women through reframing and rebuilding their mindset, rewriting old narratives and limiting beliefs, learning how to understand and communicate with their bodies, unlearning old, unhelpful diet rules, and establishing and empowering connection with their bodies. It’s such an honor to guide women through this powerful journey!

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I believe women are well-positioned to help other women, as no one understands what it’s like to stand in each other’s shoes better than our fellow females. Of course, we all come from various walks of life and have different goals, preferences, and lifestyles, but there is something incredibly special that happens when women come together to serve each other.

Due to our technology-driven culture, the possibilities are endless with online businesses. Not only do they require significantly fewer financial resources, but there are far fewer roadblocks due to other people. All we need is ourselves and the internet!
