Conversations with the Inspiring Julie Livermore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Livermore.

Julie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey started after my youngest son was born with a metabolic disease. I left my corporate job to be home with my two boys. It was a huge decision for our family, as I had just finished my MBA and was established in my career. I am pretty sure all of my family and friends thought I was crazy! I bought a DSLR camera with my last paycheck, to replace a well-loved point and shoot camera. At this point, I didn’t envision myself working in a creative field, but I had always loved capturing memories through photography! Shortly after I left my job, my husband lost his job, and we ended up relocating from Arizona to Wyoming. Living in a small, rural town with two small kids and a long winter wasn’t easy. Having photography as a creative outlet kept me sane! As I posted and shared photos, friends started asking me to take their picture. Before I knew it, I had my own business!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Right as my business was taking off in Wyoming, my husband’s job transferred us to Fort Collins, Colorado. I had to start from scratch with everything from licenses and taxes to rebuilding all of my clientele, only to move again two years later to the Denver area. We have now lived in Denver for five years! I love seeing the same families year after year, and watching as their children change and grow. Even though my journey has been full of twists and turns, my photography business has been something consistent in my life for the past decade!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in emotive, light and love-filled newborn and family portraits. A good experience at a photo session is just as important to me as the final images. I want my subjects to have fun and feel relaxed, while I create beautiful frame-worthy art! For this reason, even though my images capture authentic moments, I do guide my clients every step of the way. I want everyone to feel comfortable and at ease.

My family sessions typically take place right before sunset at a beautiful Colorado location. My newborn lifestyle sessions are done in the comfort of a family’s own home.

I am located in Westminster, CO, and travel to both the Denver and Boulder areas.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
When I am not taking photos, I spend much of my day alone working on my computer! To keep myself company, I love listening to podcasts. Some of my favorites, such as Armchair Expert, are not particularly business related, but still, inspire me! Others, such as Heartful: Living a Wildly Creative Life and On Purpose help me keep up my momentum!

A few apps I use every day are Instagram (I love sharing on stories to help build my brand), MileIQ (to track business miles), and the Weather Ap (helpful for sunsets and session conditions!).

One thing I have to work hard not to do is compare myself to other photographers. As they say, “comparison is the thief of joy”! So, although I am constantly trying to improve myself and my business, I try not to spend too much time on photography specific forums or websites.
