Conversations with the Inspiring Julie Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Nguyen.

Julie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Our lives are chock full of moments that create such huge shifts for us, but it’s the small encounters that make up the big magic worth telling.

“I came here to have a good time” is my current mantra. I am a dancer, choreographer, reiki master, life coach, and freedom seeker.

I have always grown up dancing and eventually opened up my own school in Colorado at the age of 21. I know it sounds so Abby Lee Miller (from Dance Moms), but my journey has a different twist; One that has brought me back to the heart of who I am. Early on, I was blessed with many talented dancers who eventually helped establish the company as one of the Top 20 Dance Studios in the Nation. I worked seven days a week for almost a decade to achieve such notoriety and recognition. I was eager to prove myself and to become a leader in the industry and once that dream was achieved, I realized that I was still unsatisfied. The success did not bring me the happiness that I thought it would. In fact, being “on top” was very lonely and I began searching for the deeper meaning of my life.

What was I here to do?

Surely, my life’s mission was not to train dancers who would win competitions.

I knew I was meant to do more than that.

As with all great life transitions, I was too scared to make any drastic change. I was going to just make things work, be happy and move through the internal unrest. And I did, until one day, I just could not ignore the nudges within my heart. The Universe spoke and I was forced to move.

So, I quit.

I will never forget ‘the day I quit my life.’ Like, seriously, what sane person works for almost 20 years and then just quits? I did. That power move took me on a 3-year adventure back to myself. I spent almost an entire year traveling, exploring the world, losing parts of myself and polishing other parts that somehow, over the years, were abandoned. The travel eventually opened up opportunities for me to teach dance in Asia and that was a game changer for me.

I was finding it.

I was finding my purpose and I was doing it through dance.

My job is a dance teacher, choreographer, and life coach. I offer Reiki to friends and family, but my real job is teaching LOVE (I teach love through the beautiful language of dance).

My current company, The Energetic Movement Collective, was created to fuse these aspects of energy work, movement, and people, designed to help us all dance back into our own hearts and to choreograph the life of our dreams.

The work specializes in the empowerment of other female entrepreneurs, especially in the dance world; The lessons transcend dance. The work is designed for anyone who needs support on their journey.

I have learned, through my own experience, that the quest towards living a more joyful, fun-filled and meaningful life is not always easy. It requires loads of time, compassion, forgiveness and honesty. No one teaches us how to let go of the things from our past, but every day, we get to create the steps of our life. Sometimes it just requires us to learn a new step and to dance a new dance.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey towards my own self-discovery was definitely not easy, but it was worth it. No one wants to sit, and I mean really just sit, with your internal “stuff.” Taking a look at everything that you believe about yourself, the world, relationships, family… it is a truly courageous act. It can drum up deep-rooted traumas and pain and who wants to look at that? It is hard, but it is necessary if you want to step into your fullest, most magically powerful, amazingly talented, beautifully loved… self.

My advice for women is to question everything that you believe. Ask if it is true, and be aware of how it feels. I urge you to surround yourself with those who see your greatness and feed you love and encouragement.

Be willing to do the work. Practice self-love, self-acceptance, self-awareness, and (this one is a biggie) self-forgiveness.

Looking back at pictures of myself, I often wonder what my life would have been like if I would have just believed in myself. What would have happened if that sassy, strong, creative, edgy, sincere, talented young girl would have believed more deeply in her dreams?

I want YOU to believe in your dreams. I want YOU to see your own magic and feel what it feels like to be authentically YOU!

The odds of you being born is 1 in 400+ trillion; Are you living, breathing and believing like the miracle that you are?

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am allowing myself to be a work-in-progress. I have experienced what it is like to “lose” an identity. For so long, I was “Miss Julie,” a prominent dance educator in the community, but now, I am allowing all aspects of myself to light up when needed.

I love helping people connect back into themselves. Our world is so fast-paced and with the onset of social media, I feel that many of us (self-included) sense the internal buzz of needing to hustle more, live a perfectly staged, filtered and adventurous life.

The truth is, life is beautifully complicated and we are allowed to experience the wide range of feelings that comes with being alive.

I love using different modalities which is what I believe makes me so different. I offer life coaching tools, visualization techniques, Reiki energy work, meditation, breathwork techniques and of course dance; I offer these all in an effort to bring my client back to their truest, most authentic and possible self.

I love dancing within the Yin and Yang of heart-centered work. We can totally learn how to meditate and then jam out to a little Migos.

It’s all about balance and living your best life as your best self… whatever that looks like for you.
