Conversations with the Inspiring Kaye Taavialma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaye Taavialma.

Kaye, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Almost twelve years ago, I was at the beginning of another “rebirth” period. My son was three. My daughter, one. I’d found evidence of my (then) husband’s affair just a few months prior. While I wasn’t yet at a place of empowered clarity, I did know things were changing for me. Again.

Sitting at my desk, my students having departed for the day, I took to doodling in a journal. Writing through my grief and anger. Questioning myself, my husband, the Universe. And then, at the end of the entry, I wrote three words: strength, courage, wisdom. These words bounced around in my soul, rekindling a love of India Aire’s song from 2000.

Allowing myself to settle into the power of these words, I started contemplating adding ink to my body. Wanting to incorporate these words into the design, I researched glyphs to represent them. To my astonishment, I found all three in one Viking Rune: “uruz”. Placing this mark in the center of a phoenix rising symbol, the sketch quickly morphed into ink on the top of my right wrist.

Although it would take another handful of years for me to finally emerge from the pyre of that period of my life, the recognition of the destruction/re-creation was a shift for me. Becoming aware that these phases come in life. Understanding it takes strength, courage, and wisdom to allow ourselves to be reborn. And trusting that on the other side we will be stronger, bolder, more whole expressions of ourselves.

The process of struggling to rebirth yourself is simultaneously terrifying and inspirational. It is a journey which humbles me to both participate in and bear witness to. And within that metamorphosis, coaching finds a natural home.

But it was in the Spring of 2018 that astrology moved into partnership with my coaching practice. Having made a significant life change rather abruptly, I spent time seeking understanding. Through that process, I found astrologically significant events that helped me contextualize not only the events which occurred but also my mind-frame at that time. Those connections helped me focus my reflection, strengthen my understanding, and release. From that moment forward, I’ve remained an avid student of astrology and have brought that learning into my coaching.

I firmly believe that the strength, courage, and wisdom to imagine, create, and become our truest self lies within ourselves; I also believe the stars can show us the path upon which we should travel to find that Self.

For those of you wondering, I’m a Leo Sun/Cancer Rising with a Gemini Moon. And Mercury is totally running my chart.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! And I wouldn’t wish it any different than it has been thus far. My struggles run the gamut, honestly, from surprise pregnancies to divorce to (finally!) coming out at 32 to being a single mom and having a long-distance relationship for four years (she finally relocated to Denver and we were married in 2014) to walking out of a job on a Monday without a long-term plan.

And I don’t see any of those as struggles anymore.

I think that’s the thing to keep in your frame of reference: as time passes, these moments of seeming trial and strain begin to take the form of Your Story’s arc. In every one of those instances cited earlier  (and in the gazillion others which transpired) I did my absolute best to believe there would come a time when that particular challenge’s meaning made itself known to me. I trusted it happened for a reason and that my work was to understand why and how it fits into my story.

We have two choices when confronted with struggle: embrace and own it or let it shut us down.

I’d say the best thing you can do in those moments is to remind yourself that everything is temporary and on the other side of it you’ll be someone new and amazing. Once I’d gotten old enough to experience these cycles, I started to really embrace and enjoy them because it meant on the other side of the hard, the pain, the struggle I’d get to meet someone (mostly) new. And each rebirth really has resulted in someone far cooler than the last iteration.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I help people unpack where they are astrologically so they can begin to understand the whys and whens in their life. People tend to get really inspired by their own lives when they sit with their charts. And I also help people declutter their vision. Focus in. Get perspective and then Maire Kondo the heck out of their path.

Go big and then get micro. Astro coach and Chaos Wrangler. They really do go together.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
This road of life is a really long one. Give yourself permission to change course, step-away, check-out, and throw-down (sometimes ya gotta fight for what’s yours, ya know?). But most importantly, make sure to celebrate even your smallest of wins. Kiss your fist. Take joy at the moment. Likely, the next one won’t be as glorious so take that one and sit in the feeling of pride.

Oh. And. Trust your gut. Seriously.
