Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Kimball.
Kendra, owner + lead designer, has been in the art/event planning business for almost ten years. So, I guess you could say that making experiences & making things is what she is all about. She is wildly spontaneous and ready to get on board with anything you have in mind. Alongside her is a crew of creative and detail-oriented woman ready to take on anything!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We often get asked how we “made it” in a creative career, as a female entrepreneur, boss babe, etc. and to be honest it’s SO MUCH MORE than being a creative and having a dream…that’s just where mine started.
My mom, Kimball Floral – a well-renowned florist in Colorado, was what I grew up surrounded in. Designing with her every summer, doing dozens of events at an early age, I soaked up all the rights and wrongs of an epic party. Fast forward through art school, commissioned my first art piece at 21, and a few “aha” moments that pushed me to jump into the event/wedding world! I went over to my parents for dinner and exclaimed “I’m going to be a wedding planner!” and they all agreed like it was made for me and I’d finally hit it on the nose. Oh and news flash…I had NO IDEA what I was doing. No business degree, no mentor, no timeline templates, nothing. Just me and my dream…(oh, and a few of my mom’s connections.)
Flash forward through three years of planning, learning, stretching, growing, crying, questioning, observing, breathing and serving, I had built a reputation for great service. A business that I was proud of but to be honest, I was miserable. I was pouring my heart and soul into events that didn’t feel like mine, working 3-4 part time jobs, and not satisfied with where my planning career was going. I missed art, I missed creating and I wanted more.
A name change, new motto and the confidence to do my business MY way had awoken in me. I didn’t care how others were doing it, I just knew I loved art, installations and throwing a damn good party. So, Kcidy Set out to do just that.
In this, new obstacles arose. I was back to not having any idea what I was doing or how to even talk about it. But it didn’t matter, it felt right and everything that Kcidy has ever touched has had my full attention.
I just celebrated Kcidy Design’s two year anniversary and all I kept thinking was this baby business has been more challenging, stretching, humbling, beautiful and rewarding than ever before.
And to be honest, I don’t put my business on a scale of “made it” or not. I strive to be more brave, fast, smart, healthy and unique every day & pour that into my business. I want Kcidy to continue to grow and flourish as Kendra grows.
So, I guess the truth is that it’s all been hard. And maybe for others, the path has been guided by a brighter light or maybe they learn more quickly. But this journey is mine and one that I’m proud of. I worked…HARD. I had multiple jobs the first few years to support my passion and gave my own blood, sweat and tears with everything I had.
I get emotional even writing this because I am so incredibly thankful for the clients that have trusted me, believed in me, supported me. It feels personal because it is. I care about Kcidy and it’s clients more than I can say. & If you find something you love that much…then you are exactly where you need to be.
What should we know about Kcidy Design? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We do all things party, from nonprofit soirees to rehearsal dinners and weddings with hundreds or dozens, not to mention intimate elopements for those in spontaneous love. We value creating unconventional, unique events for each client that describe them – but mostly, we just love to celebrate and throw damn good party. Because…well, it’s so much more than a job to us and life is better outside the box.
Sure, we do mood boards and color palettes, like most others, but we pride ourselves on taking steps outside the box to create your day with a “wow factor”. Custom floor plan layouts and handmade installations, we help guide and design you through the entire process from ideas to execution to ensure that every visual aspect of your event conveys the story you want to tell.
We see a lot of couples get lost in what’s been done or lose touch with themselves in the design process. Between the traditions and fads, we can help guide you through the entire process. And trust us, it’s a process, the napkins, tablescape china, the furniture and lighting all being designed around you.
We love creating things that are one of a kind – kinda like you. We develop an idea on paper and bringing it to life in your 3D world. Between colors, textures and structure materials we can saw, drill, sew, string, dye, paint and build just about anything.
Custom arbors, backdrops, aerial structures and all those little handmade details that make your guests say, “omg let me take a photo of this”.
Additionally, we work the guest experience into the design factor from day one. Because, well…life’s too short to throw a boring party.
