Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Jaramillo.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began photographing people when I was about 13 years old. I bought my mama’s old camera gear off of her anytime she upgraded, + just ran with it. what began as a hobby to avoid social interaction became a job as a concert/event photographer for a local church where I really began to learn the technicality behind what I was doing. from there it feels like the age-old tale of beginning to charge people + becoming a true business. I’ve worked all over the map of specialties, + finally landed on birth, wedding + documentary. Capturing a person’s story through emotional imagery.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I believe that I’ve had a smoother road than most, and a rougher road than some. Some of the biggest struggles I’ve had have come from not knowing how to value myself as a human being while honoring my calling as an artist. It took me a lot of years to learn how to say “no” + create a space that truly extends value to those who hire me. my advice to anyone starting out in this industry is to know your heart + your worth. Press into your values + priorities + don’t let anyone pick those two things apart. You are here for a purpose, + that purpose won’t align with everyone. Those who it does align with will be undoubtedly blessed by you though.
What should we know about Front Porch Photography? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a photographer + I specialize in visual storytelling, focusing on Wedding, Birth + Documentary. I’m best known for my work that emphasizes the details of a person’s true life. As a brand, I am proud of the ways that I have honored my own humanity in my work. I don’t belittle the experiences me or my clients have, rather I use them as opportunities to capture a person’s heart in the midst of life. The thing that sets me apart from others is the attention I pour into my client experience. I want to know their heart + what makes it beat.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Find your community! It doesn’t have to be people who work in the same field as you. If you have the people who support you in your corner, then you will succeed. The first few years I was in business, I honestly didn’t even know HOW to network. I was so naive to the beautiful community that waited for me beyond that next step. I became dear friends with a fellow creative who introduced me to the social media realm of the community. Things snowballed from there + I found my people. The ones who would encourage me to grow + thrive as a creative.
