Conversations with the Inspiring Linda Winter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Winter.

Linda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I became a cosmetologist in 1970 and am still a salon owner today. I attended a ladies program in Scottsdale where they did a show about accessories and how they could make any outfit POP! At that moment, I knew my career would take a new turn. I bought three pieces of jewelry and the first person I showed them to bought them all. I was already out of business! I got 12 pieces and they flew out the door too! I started doing shows at conventions and showed ladies how to accessorize to maximize their wardrobe. Soon I was doing 30 shows a year. In 1997 I opened a boutique with fashions, hats and all the things women love. and added my hair salon. The business grew and I was able to give personal service to many loyal customers. Volunteering in my community has been important to me and I support dozens of non-profits every year. In 2015 I moved to my current location. Today, Accessories with a Flair!…and Hair is a boutique, hair salon, make-up studio and wig center. It’s a one-stop shop for everything to make you look HOT!!! In 2015 I developed my private label Star Natural Skin Care line for all ages, which has become very popular. I have never been employed by anyone but have enjoyed the journey. My diverse customers trust me and know when they come through my door, they will get RETAIL THERAPY!!!!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a struggle but it requires dedication, night and day planning, cash, marketing expertise, knowing your niche market and customer service. Since I have been in business for 49 years, I learned you need to change with the times and never stop learning. In bad English…..they buy YOU first….then they buy what you got!!! Never think you just work hard at first, let up or hire a manager, then the cash just rolls in. It’s your baby and you better take care of it!!!!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Accessories with a Flair!…and Hair story. Tell us more about the business.
I am the owner, marketer, hairdresser, make-up artist, buyer and everything else. My wig business is huge, not just for hair loss but for travel, work, a new color or just for fun. I provide personal service to the max. If people don’t feel better when they leave my store than when they came in…I haven’t done my job. I stay current with great fashion finds and I can help ladies know what makes them look great whether for business or pleasure. I do make-over sessions with a professional photographer which turns into a keepsake forever. I want everyone to have fun…even their shopping spouses or boyfriends. I always show then how to get their FLAIR ON!

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Networking groups are paramount in business today. Whether it is an event you attend or an online Facebook group dedicated to your profession, you have to keep your name out there. I read many marketing books over the years which sparked ideas in me. I keep a journal of ideas and when I look back, I unconsciously did them and they worked. When you are out of site….you are out of mind!
