Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Tullar.
Lindsay, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
You know the scene in Harry Potter where Harry is picking out his wand and there was that moment of “This is it”? I can confidently say that’s what it was like when I picked up my first camera. When I say I have a passion for documenting everything I mean it, I am fairly certain my parents were finding themselves constantly groaning over the number of trips we were having to make to get rolls of film developed or, when we finally reached a new level in the Tullar household by introducing digital camera’s to the family, getting our photo’s printed. I always had some sort of digital device to document on, it did not matter if it was a simple point and shoot, cell phone, film camera or polaroid I was CONSTANTLY taking pictures of anything I could. This passion only grew as I got older, the only difference was I no longer needed to rely on mom and dad for their camera’s. Thank’s mom and dad, you guys are the real MVP in supporting this expensive dream!
Has it been a smooth road?
I would be lying if I said yes. The biggest challenge I found myself in were comments from numerous people telling me I would never get far with drive in the arts. As I watched a lot of my peers succeed and move onward towards bigger and better things, I was constantly in a state of “What if’s”. But the results in what I produce are a constant reminder that I am exactly where I need to be.
My advice to a woman in ANY field of work is to NEVER allow someone else to silence you. NEVER diminish your own happiness because it does not reflect in the eyes of others and most importantly NEVER give up on yourself. You will always have someone out there trying to dim your light but SHINE ON GIRL!!!!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Redwood + Sage story. Tell us more about it.
Favorite question! I am a lifestyle wedding and portrait photographer. I specialize in creating galleries that share honest emotions, explore the vibrancy of happiness and tell a story of the individuals I am capturing. I am known to step outside of the normality of what is considered “traditional” photography and bring new attention to detail throughout my work. I am proud of what my images reflect and how it reads back to clients. What sets me apart from others in my field is my ability to create an open and honest line of communication between myself and my clients. My clients choose me because they feel comfortable expressing themselves in their truest way possible.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Being told I am too abrasive when I stand up for something I am passionate about. Whether it is in my career, my beliefs, my morals. I believe a woman is coerced into being apologetic about what or how we do things, especially in my field. I also believe we are not communicating with our fellow woman entrepreneurs, we are all in the same boat and I want to see so many of us succeed, too much tearing down and not enough support.
