Conversations with the Inspiring Lindsey Anderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Anderson.

Lindsey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in a small town in North Dakota and graduated from college with a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting Communications. I was hoping to get a job shooting and editing video for news stations, but when I moved back to my hometown I landed a graphic design internship in the only small marketing firm in town because I had taken one class in Photoshop. Lucky for me, I was taught early on in my career to be resourceful and was able to learn on the job or Google enough along the way to fake it until I made it.

By the time my internship was over, the lead graphic designer was leaving and I was offered the position. I worked there for a few years before my (now) husband’s company opened an office in Denver and we decided to pick up and move to the big city.

Since moving to Denver, I’ve worked at a print brokerage, coffee shop, temp agency, and email marketing firm all the while freelancing on the side. In 2013, I started Six Leaf Design mostly as a reason to learn how to build a website and started building up my brand and client base. In 2016 I decided to take the leap to freelance full-time and I’ve never looked back. 2018 was my best year to date, not only for my business but at any of my jobs!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I spent a lot of my earlier years feeling like I wasn’t good enough and I think that is such a common thread, especially among young women. When I moved from a town of 15,000 to a city of nearly 3 million, I couldn’t even call myself a graphic designer. I didn’t have formal training, had never worked at an agency with more than five people, and was moving to an area that was flooded with art students graduating every day. I ended up working at a coffee shop for a year because I didn’t even have the confidence to apply for jobs in my field and then it took me seven months to find a job once I did get the guts to start really looking (thanks, Great Recession!).

But here’s the thing: no one is good when they start out. But you still have to start to get anywhere. If I could go back and tell my younger self one thing, it would be to start sooner. Start even if you don’t feel good enough because eventually, you will be good and the confidence will follow.

What should we know about Six Leaf Design? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a graphic designer who specializes in logos, branding and Squarespace websites. My favorite thing to do is help small businesses and entrepreneurs who want to do things a bit differently and not just follow the latest trend on Pinterest. My style is bold + vibrant and I love working with other strong women who are running or starting their own businesses.

I strive to walk my clients through their entire branding and web design as a collaboration. My processes have been refined over the last six years. That means each step is intentional so my clients never feel uneasy forking over their hard-earned money to a designer who may or may not fall off the face of the earth at any given moment losing their logo files forever and ever amen.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I think that authenticity is a new trend that will not be going away anytime soon. The younger generations are starting to see through traditional marketing schemes that have always worked in the past. And women, in particular, are positioned to show themselves in more real and flawed light than ever before. The age of the internet means that there’s an enormous amount of people you’re able to reach. It’s completely impossible to make everyone happy and that means you’re probably going to turn some people off. But by being your authentic self, you’re also able to find more people that WILL relate to you and those connections are going to be even better.
