Today we’d like to introduce you to Lissette Wells.
Lissette, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
STREETCAR8’s start was serendipitous. We were approached by a former colleague who needed online training assistance. We not only love learning, but we enjoy helping people learn and helping people get better at their jobs. With expertise in instructional and software design/development – and a deep desire to build a remote work environment – we felt it was absolutely the right time to launch an e-learning company.
Has it been a smooth road?
We were fortunate to start our new venture with a contract in place. That gave us a little bit of time to think about how to connect with potential clients. The path was exciting, but not necessarily smooth. We learned a lot in those first few months about who to reach out to, their pain points and how we might be able to help. One of the best things we did early on was to create a plan for how we expected to move forward. It was not lengthy or overly formal, but it was the way we expressed what we were about, our goals and how we planned to achieve them. We had a sense from the beginning that it was less about being right than it was about having something to shoot for. That roadmap encouraged us to try some specific activities. We’d learn, tweak and then try again. It’s a helpful cycle that we continue to this day.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into STREETCAR8 story. Tell us more about the business.
STREETCAR8 was born in 2017 and we provide custom anytime/anywhere courses, video tutorials and training materials for organizations. My partner has been in the adult learning space for her entire career. My main responsibilities lie in the areas of business development and operations. I like to say that because we’re a small company, anything that is not directly related to instructional design and e-learning development is in my camp. I’m super proud that after just a few years, most of our work comes from referrals and repeat business. Building and keeping good relationships is something we set out to do from the beginning. We’re organized and we try hard to be responsive and to build high-quality instructional products and services. I truly believe that it’s what keeps our customers happy and it’s the reason they return.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
It’s important to really figure out who you are, what you do and who you want to reach. We are a business that services other businesses. When we started, we weren’t networking effectively in that we attended events where we weren’t likely to meet many potential clients or good referral partners. Now, we are more likely to stick to events that are B2B focused. Joining associations in our field has also been helpful. For example, since we are a learning & development company, we’re members of the Association for Talent Development (ATD). Attending ATD events helps us connect with our peers which has been great for camaraderie, mentorship, and business.
