Conversations with the Inspiring Mallorie Porter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallorie Porter.

Mallorie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always loved doing hair! It started when I was a little girl, cutting and styling my Barbie’s hair. Now, I am a top stylist at one of the leading salons in the Denver area.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road to where I am today wasn’t a straight shot. I had to overcome having little support, balancing multiple jobs, and moving cities right as my career began to take off. After high school, instead of pursuing hair styling, my parents wanted me to go to college and study something that, in their minds, would be more dependable and financially stable. After a couple of years at big universities studying things like dental hygiene and business management, I realized I wasn’t happy. We likely have all heard it before, but one day my professor told us to “think of something you love to do, find a way to make a career out of it, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” What I loved to do was hair, so why wasn’t I following my dream?! So, I dropped out of college and began cosmetology school. I loved it even more than I thought I could and never looked back. As soon as I finished school, I got married and months later, I started an amazing apprentice program at Europa Colour Salon Spa in Fort Collins. It was tough at first. I had to balance working two other jobs to make ends meet, and after a few years when I was just starting to get comfortable, my husband’s work moved us to Littleton. I was nervous to start all over in a new place and have to rebuild a whole new clientele. However, I found a home at Zandi K Salon, and with lots of determination and hustle, I went from making minimum wage with almost no clients, to being a fully booked six-figure stylist. It’s so rewarding to be able to say that I truly love what I do. If you have a dream, find a way to make it happen, and never give up!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
As a stylist, I really love everything about hair. From precision cutting to balayage color, to hair extensions. You name it, I love it and have worked really hard to be great at it. I also specialize in weddings and have a true passion for creating a unique and beautiful style for someone’s special day.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
The person who inspired me the earliest in my career was one of my mentors during my apprenticeship at Europa. She was the top stylist there and she loved sharing her expertise. I admired her passion for her craft and how she made her clients feel so special. I told myself that I wanted to reach her level of achievement one day.
