Conversations with the Inspiring Mariah Stewart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Stewart.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
This is tough because I feel as though I’m just truly starting out. Though growing up, I loved watching Oprah and Tyra’s show. Their style of interviewing really intrigued me and I always thought “wow! I want to do that.” When I got to college, I got into journalism. Reporting was my focus but at the last minute and do I mean the very laaaaast minute, I felt a shift. I didn’t want to be a reporter. I had taken all these classes geared towards news reporting. It was the last semester of my senior year. So, what do I do? I reached out to a professor in my department and he promised that as long as I was dedicated to getting out there and getting my skills on camera, he would help. Thank you, Steve! So, I began my YouTube channel. At first, just to vlog so I could get more comfortable on camera. Then, I thought of actually transitioning to interviewing. I wasn’t totally comfortable in front of the camera so I asked my friend Khalil to help me with College Talks. We’d go around and interview students about relationships and from there I just continued at it. Now, I have Convos with Mariah where I interview artist of all forms here in Denver and my podcast, Melanin Voices. Basically, just following my gut.

Has it been a smooth road?
Whew! Surely has NOT been a smooth road. Smooth? What’s that? Ha! I’m joking but seriously no it hasn’t. Starting with my YouTube channel. There’s still so much to improve. I’d love to get better visuals with convos with Mariah but I haven’t found a videographer to help quite yet so I do it all myself. Sometimes, the camera stops halfway through recording and we have to start over again messing up the continuity. Or the sound quality isn’t what I would like so I get frustrated. And don’t get me started on the podcast. It’s a lot. The one thing that keeps me going is I love what I do. Doing what you love doesn’t mean there won’t be any inconveniences in the process. Simply just means it’ll make it all worth it. I’d say to women who are just starting out, don’t be afraid to ask for help or accept help. My… I wouldn’t say pride but may want to not be a burden to others has stopped me from asking for help. In turn, letting people think I “got it.” When most times I do, but it’s nice to get help so you can pour your whole self into your projects. But also support works both ways. You can not ask for support if you are not willing to give it. And last but certainly not least, find your tribe! Having people to support you is nice but it’s also nice when those people truly know your goals and can call you out (with love) if you’re slacking on them. There’s a ton more of advice I’m willing to give and willing to hear so if you have gems, hit me up!

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I do a little of everything but my specialty is hosting and producing. Currently, I host and produce my YouTube channel segment Convos With Mariah as well as my podcast Melanin Voices. I’m most proud of the fact that I create a space for people to show up as themselves whether they’re a guest on my personal show or my podcast. They don’t have to portray a facade. I believe a unique quality about me is that my want for everyone to win always shines through. I created my podcast and individual segment not only to do what I love but to showcase everyone else doing what they love as well.

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
My podcast! Melanin Voices Podcast is always a good outlet for me. Of course, I’m biased but I think listeners would agree we’ve built a nurturing community that has an open dialogue. I also enjoy “The Friendzone, Yo Deadass, and Invisibilia. I just love a good podcast. I also am currently reading “A Return to Love ” by Marianne Williamson. I also enjoy watching Tedtalks and interviews. Usually, I’m drawn to interviews or discussions with those who are successful in my industry. Though I enjoy listening to other people’s journeys in general because it helps me identify why I’m on mine.
