Conversations with the Inspiring Marissa LaCome

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa LaCome.

Marissa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I went to the University of New Mexico in 2011. Straight out of high school, I was unsure what I wanted to do with my life but my parents always believed college was the right path for me. Two years into my bachelor’s degree, I realized I wanted to do hair and makeup. Instead of throwing away the past two years I got a bachelor’s in business administration. In 2015, I graduated from college and moved to Denver to start cosmetology school. I really had a passion for makeup so upon graduating I found a salon that would allow me to do both hair and makeup. It has been almost three years since I graduated from Paul Mitchel the School in Denver and I am absolutely loving every day of my job. I currently work at Carson and Co salon in the ballpark area downtown. I love doing makeup, color and extensions. I am still learning every day and I can’t wait to see how I grow in this career!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think any road can be completely smooth. I have had to overcome so many obstacles. I think in this career the hardest thing to overcome is yourself. You have to fight every day to believe in yourself and have confidence in your skills. Hair and makeup is an art and can be so subjective so learning to believe in yourself is so important. I think you have to keep your head high and know that anything worth having will never come easy. Keep on fighting!

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a hair and makeup artist. I love coloring hair and doing extensions. I also loving working weddings. Event hair and makeup are so fun and rewarding. My passion will always be makeup but hair keeps me on my toes and always striving for excellence.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
I think it’s important to do what your heart tells you what to do. My family will always support me in anything I choose to do but straight out of high school they really pushed me to go to college. I always knew that I wanted to do makeup but instead first followed someone else’s dreams instead of my own. I am so happy in my career and I know that it won’t always be easy but if you are doing something you are passionate about it will always be worth it.
