Conversations with the Inspiring Michelle Astrauskas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Astrauskas.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Hazel Marie Ink came to be after my first daughter was born three years ago. My goal was to build a business that I could work from home with and still raise her. I wanted to be the loudest voice in my daughter’s ear. So for me, that meant going back to work and daycare was not an option.

I’ve always had a creative side and knew that would be my outlet. So, it started with me hand painting wood signs. Signs turned into making custom tees, custom tees opened up another avenue of graphic design. Now, Hazel Marie Ink is a full spectrum from graphic and logo design to applying those designs to any type of apparel.

It’s been three years of a lot of trials and tribulations but I’ve found my stride! I’ve found the balance of now being a mom of two little girls and working my business full time from home in my own “babe cave” in the basement. The future is very bright and we are extremely blessed!!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been smooth. You figure out along the way of what works and what doesn’t. I learned at some point, you have to prioritize your time and go where the money flows. That was in custom apparel and design. I had to narrow my focus down to what I do best!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Hazel Marie Ink story. Tell us more about it.
Hazel Marie Ink specializes in graphic design & logo design and application of those designs to apparel. I’m known mostly for my custom apparel. I’m most proud of doing this on my own. Building it from nothing to something that provides for my family. What sets me apart is me, my work ethic, my ability to build relationships and my designs.
The majority of my designs are original.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I would say my work ethic is what has brought me the most success. I may not be the most talented but I will work my fingers to the bone. I’ve learned as an entrepreneur, there are no days off. And if you want to build something extraordinary out of something ordinary, you have to have an abnormal work ethic.
