Conversations with the Inspiring Monica Zamora

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Zamora.

Monica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Our workshop is based in Taxco, Mexico, a city world-renowned for its handmade silver jewelry production and our wholesale distribution office is located close to the RINO district in Denver Colorado. I’ve always being driven to express myself creatively. Everything started with an idea. Because I was not terrible impressed with what I was seeing in the market I began thinking about the kind of things I would actually want to wear. I started sketching these ideas on paper on a visit to see my family I took a day trip to Taxco where I felt more inspired and began to create a jewelry line with innovative finishes using geometric shapes and featherlight construction styles.

I booked my first Gift Show and discovered how little I actually knew about the jewelry business. I did the show with so few designs and so little inventory it is amazing that I survived my first trade show, but I did. I kept building my inventory, designing new pieces, attending many more trade shows and building my customer base. I work hard, stuck to it and seven years later my ideas continue to flow everyday. Recently I launched a 18k gold filled new jewelry collection handmade in Brazil to complement my existing sterling silver line. I cannot wait to see what direction inspiration will take me.

Has it been a smooth road?
It have been a rocky road and I don’t mean ice cream, every day has its own unique challenges, but when you created something from nothing, things do not often work out as easy as you think they will. Fortunately, there are always solutions to problems and having your own business forces you to solve this problems. Limited resources are a continual struggle. My advice for young women is to never give up and never be afraid to take a risk.

I design and produce unique one of a kind handmade sterling silver jewelry that is not mass-produced and nobody else has. I build the brand by myself form nothing. My unique sense of style and love of fashion.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Look for people you can learn from, ask a lot of questions and try to learn from other people’s mistakes it is cheaper that way!
