Today we’d like to introduce you to Reagan Snyder.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Reagan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey with photography started at a fairly young age. My dad believed that it was essential to have a good camera in the home, to capture treasured moments. He was gracious enough to let me play around with his camera and teach me what he knew.
Fast forward to college – this was the year I took an ‘Intro to Photography’ class, which was the perfect excuse to invest in a DSLR camera. The class taught me some good tips and tricks, but more than anything, it pushed me to take pictures of anything and everything. This same year, my boyfriend at the time (now husband), was asked to capture a wedding. He invited me to tag along and use my new camera. This was when I fell in love with wedding photography – there is so much beauty to be captured, along with a love story, and so many raw emotions! Not to mention, it’s a day that holds timeless significance in a couple’s life. These are the images they will show many generations to follow.
From here, I began to process through what it would look like to do photography as more than a hobby. My personality is to just go for it – I have an entrepreneurial spirit at my core. I was that kid that owned several ‘businesses’ and was always dreaming up new ideas. I began crafting my brand, establishing my vision, marketing my business, and taking pictures of everyone and everything. Flash forward a few years down the road, and business has been created because of hard work and commitment.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It would be nice to say the journey has been a smooth one, but I believe that all journeys worth fighting for involved bumps in the road. I think the first bump I faced in getting my feet off the ground was experiencing self-doubt and comparison. Let me tell you. These are destructive and the sooner you can dig deep and establish confidence in your identity, the better off you and your business will be.
The second obstacle I have faced in my journey is trying to mesh together being a business owner, while also trying to figure out the journey of motherhood. My husband and I had our son in March of 2019, and while it was the greatest blessing, it has been difficult trying to balance these two parts of my life. My biggest advice in all of this is surround yourself with cheerleaders – establish who your people are, and keep them close. Find people who are going to advocate for you, push you, cheer you on through thick and thin, and be there when it matters most.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Weddings are my specialty, but I also offer couples sessions, portrait sessions, and even family sessions. It’s always hard to say what sets you apart from everyone else because there are so many talented photographers and artists out there. My goal is always to capture images in a raw and organic light because I believe that this is how they remain timeless. My eye for color tends to be drawn towards a neutral palette, but I aim to keep colors (especially skin tones) genuine. I am proud of the brand I have created, in that it is a pure reflection of me.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Go for it! It can be so easy to get stuck on all the ‘what if’s’ and obstacles that could get in your way. Don’t let your fears and doubts stop you from doing what you love. As soon as I learned that I needed to remove all fear and doubt, my business started to flourished. Also, find your people and hold them close – the ones who are going to cheer you on, and push you to reach your goals.
