Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxy Harbitter.
Roxy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Six years ago, I traded skyscrapers for mountains by moving from New York City to Colorado. I studied film production and loved the energy of the city, but it was time for a change of pace. When I arrived in Colorado, a grown-up playground unfolded in front of me. Highways followed rivers into the mountains instead of cutting through them. Valleys opened up with steep craggy peaks towering above them whispering, “Maybe you could climb up.” Late New York City nights succumbed to twilight alarms to fight I-70 traffic and continue the exploration.
My move into a van happened three years ago. I currently work full-time from my van with publications and outdoor focused companies to create authentic content. I still get to enjoy the Colorado playground but from a totally different perspective. I focus mainly on photography and videography with an emphasis on environmentally friendly practices and voices. I am passionate about the place we call home and strive to live as gently on it as possible (one way is by buying carbon credits for any fossil fuels I use). My work reflects that love of nature and passion.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve always said, “You’ll never get what you don’t ask for,” and the worst they can say is, “no.” It hasn’t been a smooth road and I’ve had to self advocate almost the entire time. Representing yourself while working with multiple different companies can get complicated because you want to mold to exactly what the company wants. But those companies hired you for your skills and unique vision. Stay true to your creative abilities, ask for what you need (both monetarily and support wise), and don’t be afraid to try out some new things along the way.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I focus on photography and video production with an emphasis on sustainability. I like to think my specialty is authenticity. What you see is what you get and it’s not going to get overly photo-shopped or sugar-coated. I am most proud of stepping out of line and following the projects that make me feel fulfilled.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
I am the youngest of three sisters, so I had the push and pull of wanting to belong, while also wanted to prove myself as an individual. Growing up, my parents were extremely loving and supportive but also gave me the space to figure out what helped me prosper. I think it was that space and the ‘youngest-sibling-syndrome,’ that allowed me to figure out what I wanted to do and how I wanted to live as an adult.
