Conversations with the Inspiring Samantha Gilbert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Gilbert.

Samantha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After graduating from the University of Arizona, I found myself back in my home town of Denver to take on the real estate world. I had top-notch training from my father, Mitch Gilbert (also with RE/MAX Masters Millennium) who has been in the real estate business 25+ years. While buying and selling houses on the side, I started working for Zillow Group as a marketing consultant for top producing agents and teams on the eastcoast. Once a month, I would travel to Maryland, Delaware, DC, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania to meet face to face with my clients and coach them on marketing and how to convert online leads.

During this time, I purchased my first property at age 24. I lived in the master and rented out the other rooms in my three bed four bath townhome in Parker where I was basically living for free as my tenants were mostly covering my mortgage. It was then that I realized the power of owning real estate and “house hacking” your way to financial freedom. I wanted to tell all my friends and show them how buying a house can be a simple process and one of the most important steps you can make for future financial freedom.

After almost three years of working at Zillow and conversing with over 300 agents/month regarding their experience, business, marketing, and goals; I decided I was ready to take on the Denver real estate market head on and transition into a full-time real estate agent. With a strong foundation rooted in the financial side of the process, my true inspiration has always lied in helping clients realize their investing potential. I am fueled by helping millennials (and all walks of life) dig themselves out of the renting trap and understand the capital gains that come with owning real estate. As a homeowner and property manager it is my mission to share my story and help others understand real estate to create more wealth and financial stability.

After breaking away from my corporate Zillow career, I sold six houses in my first six months as a full-time real estate agent.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My advice to younger women who are just starting their journey is to be patient, keep learning, and find a good mentor. If you’re impatient like me you will want results immediately and get pretty discouraged when that doesn’t happen right away. Masterpieces take time and as long as you’re consistent in what you do things will fall into place, don’t lose faith. In addition to being patient you must always be learning. I hardly listen to music anymore because I’m listening to educational podcasts or audiobooks these days. Feed your brain with knowledge like you feed your body with food. Finding a good mentor is another key component in success. Having an expert on your side and taking you under their wing is priceless!

What should we know about RE/MAX Masters Millennium? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am fueled by helping millennials get out of the renting trap and introducing them to the world of owning real estate and the capital gains that come with it. Personally, I have never spent a penny on renting. By age 24, I became a homeowner and landlord on my own accord without financial help from outside sources. I own a three bed four bath townhome in Parker, Colorado and manage it as a rental property to live almost for free. Generally, millennials think homeownership isn’t within reach or is for settling down after marriage. These are common misconceptions and what often deter people or scare people into walking away from homeownership. What millennials don’t know are the benefits of building equity. It is my mission to help you reach financial freedom by educating others in investing in real estate the right way so that it’s not a big scary unknown path. It’s a secure and exciting starting point to a financially free future!

It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I listen to these two podcasts CONSTANTLY! The real estate podcast talks a lot about “house hacking” and the concept behind it. You will hear a lot of different strategies of people investing in real estate and how they have become so successful. The money podcast will deep dive into people’s financial situations weather they are 100k+ in debt or just bad with their money and talk about how they turned themselves around.
