Conversations with the Inspiring Sarah Mask

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Mask.

Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a fun-loving, free-spirited 19-year-old yogini from Missouri, I was first interested in working in a spa specifically for the atmosphere. I was lucky enough to have a CIDESCO school near me that allowed me to learn both massage and esthetics. I thought for sure massage was going to be my thing… but then… I started learning more about the skin and ingredients and quickly found myself to be OBSESSED!

After relocating to Fort Collins in 2010, I knew that to reach my potential truly. I had to increase my knowledge in holistic care. And not that woo-woo kind of holistic care, but that practical use kind of comprehensive care, one ‘woo’ if you will. I found an incredible degree program to become an Integrative Health Practitioner. It was there that I harnessed my skills in holistic nutrition, herbalism, and energy work. I received multiple certifications, including High Touch Jin Shin Jyutsu, aromatherapy, and my Master Reiki Attunement.

I have always been passionate about skin, wellness, and in general helping others. It has been a gift to have spent the last fifteen years focusing on ways to heal and med the body both inside and out. However, it was the support of the people of Fort Collins that allowed me to experiment and officially create what is now known as The Mask Method! The Mask Method is a comprehensive approach to skin revision that integrates Topical-Internal-Energetic wellness.

Has it been a smooth road?
I envy the mythical smooth road business owners! No, it has not always been easy, but it has always been worth it! As I began to explore integrating holistic concepts into my skin treatments, I received a lot of push back from fellow estheticians. I didn’t plan to start Masque by Mask as soon as I did, but I knew I had to if I wanted to follow my own path.

In such a competitive industry, I not only had to be excellent and unique at my craft, but I now had to also be excellent in marketing, business/money management, and fighting the mind games you have with yourself as an entrepreneur! People always warn you about that, but it is something that we all have to go through, no matter how much support you have. The best advice I have for any woman wanting to start her own business is therapy, haha, kidding, not kidding. When you are trying to create something new in an industry full of preconceived opinions, judgments, and competitiveness, you have to stay true to your inner voice! That, and hire people to do the things that have nothing to do with your gift to the world.

Please tell us about Masque by Mask Balanced Skincare.
At Masque by Mask, we use The Mask Method concept that integrated Topical-Internal-Energetic wellness. What does that mean? It means that we can’t truly revise the skin without knowing what dysfunctions are happening in the skin itself, what digestive or health challenges that are contributing to the dysfunctions, and the energetic factors that keep us from softening and letting change take place. Usually, what is happening on the face is a reflection on what is happening internally. I find it necessary to look at the entire body as a whole to make a difference in the skin.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Having the parents that I do! My parents raised me to always be a free thinker, maintain a healthy skepticism, be confident, go after what I want, and to never ever take any BS from anyone. Even though to this day, they don’t totally understand what I do, but they continually offer me unconditional support!

Free to be myself, I have identified as a healer and advocate since I was young. Throughout my life, I’ve been drawn to people that need assistance in some way or another. Whether that is needing someone to talk to, offering advice, or standing up for others, I’ve always wanted to help people in whatever way I can.

Additionally, I have always been very drawn to the energies around me. Either mother nature or instinct, I can read situations well and have always felt an innate intuition towards a situation. I feel as though that has immensely propelled my career into where I currently am and going.
