Conversations with the Inspiring Sarsee Beauty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarsee Beauty.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sarsee. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Where did I get started is an awfully boring question; it didn’t start off quite as glamorous as I am today. Originally from a small town in Wisconsin, there wasn’t much for beauty. The only person who did inspire me was my Bobonne, my Belgian grandma. She was the definition of a classic beauty. She would get her hair pressed every Friday. I would listen intently to the gossip and watch in awe as the hair lady pressed my grandma’s curls. She would never leave the house without a dash of blush, lipstick, perfect curls, and a matching scarf. She had a timeless elegance that I always try to emulate.

I moved to Colorado almost five years ago and that’s when things started to get interesting. I had no real idea of what I wanted to do in life. I just knew I enjoyed helping people. I was working too many early mornings as a barista and my friend Blaise encouraged me to get on a webcam and start doing makeup tutorials. I had already loved doing makeup on myself working on blending eyeshadow and finding that perfect color combination. After doing tutorials for almost a year, I felt like I still wasn’t really reaching my goal of helping anyone. I knew working at Sephora would give me a chance to teach others how makeup has the power to transform how you feel. I got the job after several applications and interviews.

At Sephora, I got the chance to work on the technical aspects of makeup artistry like sanitizing brushes or matching someone’s complexion. However, I wasn’t able to do all the bold colors that I loved and I still didn’t feel like I was helping people as much as I could. So that leads us today where I’m still able to work at Sephora but my main passion lies outside work. I’m starting to be able to do more freelance makeup artistry where I can truly explore my creativity and independence. I love turning someone from their bare self into something just a little more magical. My story is only just beginning and I can’t wait to see what else I can create.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t really think anyone’s journey is ever going to be a smooth one. I feel like everything that has happened in my life, whether good or bad has led me to something greater. A lot of my life has been trying something new and seeing how it goes. I think the idea that you need to know exactly who you want to be as soon as you hit “adulthood” is a little unrealistic. I went to school for a while for marketing/business then nursing then psychology. For a while, I was a barista making drinks. I even had a stint as a gas station fry cook and as a clerk working at a McPoyle-Esque Staples for a few months. All I knew is I didn’t want to do any of those things with my life. At one point, I thought I really wanted to be an influenster getting a bunch of free products.

I realized I just really loved doing makeup and creating looks. I found what really made me happy was changing someone’s day. When they sat in my makeup chair, they could come in with any negative feelings. I just hope they left feeling more beautiful. For a long time, I thought makeup was the only way I could make someone feel great but photography has become an extension of that. I love coming up with the makeup looks and being able to take the idea to the next level with photography. My partner Blaise and I have really been working over the last year to help create more photography that shows off my makeup looks and his music career.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Being a makeup artist, you are required to fill quite a few roles. You may only need to put a little blush and foundation on someone but you are there to make that person feel special at the moment. You are also there to listen and be a friend even if it’s only for a few moments; they are sitting in your chair. You may need to be there for any touch-ups if there’s any tears or mishaps. As for what I specialize in, I’m willing to try any look I can do. A natural makeup look, smoky eye, or bold color if the look really requires it. I really thrive in vibrant colors and really bold looks. I love when you can look at a model’s face and see what colors or what contours really make them shine.

With photography, I’m able to capture the makeup looks how I envisioned and keep them in a time capsule I can have forever. I’m most proud of my ability to make others see something new and beautiful in themselves and my ability to keep changing and evolving. I love that if something doesn’t make me happy, I’m not afraid to start again. I will continue to change and evolve in the future. Makeup isn’t permanent, so don’t be afraid to mess up your eyeliner wing! Just like you shouldn’t be afraid to take risks and continue to do what makes you happy.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
My Bobonne was my first true inspiration for what beauty and independence looked like. She always looked beautiful no matter where she was headed, always spoke her opinion, and worked tirelessly to support her entire family. Even learning English from watching daytime television. I will always try to work just as hard and try to be just as fashionable while doing it! There are other timeless beauties in the spotlight that have also inspired me. Some of them include Shania Twain and Jessica Lange. Shania Twain was the first concert I first attended and I loved her own unique style and her upbeat music. She was someone considered a “country singer” but came out with an entire pop anthem that rocked the 90’s. Plus she also looked amazing whatever she was doing, I would always love her in leopard or even just a blue jean jacket. Jessica Lange is also an inspiration for different reasons. Jessica Lange caught my eye when I saw her on American Horror Story. I loved her ability to fully commit to a character and her glamour well into her 60’s.

One of my favorite scenes is her singing David Bowie Life on Mars as the ever enchanting Elsa Mars. I began to take a further look back at her career. I found her older works such as Frances, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and Grey Gardens. She fully commits to her roles and I can really see how much she cares about her craft. Jessica Lange has pushed past age barriers in Hollywood and made a career well beyond her 60’s. Each of these women had their own unique style that was unequivocally them. They worked tirelessly to get where they were going and looked gorgeous while doing so. I hope in some way I emulate them a little bit in my daily life. Hard work with a whole lot of fabulousness and beauty.
