Today we’d like to introduce you to Sejal Parag.
Sejal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started KarmaLit out of a love for giving back and a desire to do something that set my heart on fire. After eight years of planning events for an education non-profit, I was feeling unfulfilled. I was surrounded by teachers making enormous impacts with their students. I wanted to get out from behind the desk and create my own dream job. So, I started slowly – researching, making mistakes, falling on my face, googling all the things, asking questions, asking more questions, and falling again :). I spent hours upon hours and then days and weeks crafting our candle formulas, researching packaging and learning the handmade lingo. I’ll never forget what it felt like to see an email come to my inbox that read, “You’ve made a sale!”
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I read a saying that went something like “don’t compare your chapter 1 to someone’s chapter 20”. We’re all in different parts of our journey, in different seasons of life so support others instead of comparing.
What should we know about KarmaLit? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Every idea starts with a problem. Ours was simple: the lack of premium, eco-friendly candles that filled a room, but were also affordable. Conscious of our environmental impact, we created a product using sustainable resources and from ingredients harvested ethically. Our wax is extracted from soybeans which are grown year-round by American farmers, making it completely renewable and sustainable.
But we want to be a part of something even greater.
We created the Smell.Good.Do.Good initiative as a way to stand for something greater, facilitate learning, and to have an impact that lasts beyond our product’s ephemeral purpose.
Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
Growing up, my mom would light a candle every night at 6 pm. It was her way of slowing down, getting dinner ready, and setting the tone for the rest of the evening. I’ve only known homes to be warm and cozy and of course, that includes a lit candle!
