Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Castellanos.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My mom loved taking pictures growing up, which annoyed me but then, it grew into my own passion. I started taking pictures on my iPhone and then, I got a film camera for Christmas one year and took pictures of my little sisters growing up, nature, and views of places I traveled too. My true appreciation of photography and knowledge of it came in high school from a teacher who is a professional photographer on her own time, she is amazing and encourages me to do what I love to this day!
Has it been a smooth road?
No, when I got my first film camera I didn’t know anything about light exposure, shutter speed, lenses, film, etc. One of my high school teachers taught me what I know about photography. I reached out to her because she had so much experience with photography and I saw that many of my pictures were coming out blurry after I had developed them. As a high school student with no money obviously, my parents were getting tired of spending money on Film so I learned and researched with her. Advice I would give is to find a mentor in the area your passionate about to guide you. A mentor will help you get through the tough times and will probably help you avoid the don’ts. Mentorship can help out in any area of life.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a young individual who loves taking pictures of nature and environments I visit. Most pictures on my Instagram page are actually taken on my phone but my ultimate goal is to get a digital camera in order to take quality pictures for my page. I am most proud of being recognized by Voyage Denver, I would have never thought of being asked questions on my passion and hobby of photography.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Biggest barrier today in my industry is social media. Anyone can take a picture and everyone’s perspective of beautiful or amazing is different. When I take a picture of a scenery, I like I really take a step back and ask myself is this just another Instagram post or is it a quality picture that I could see on a magazine or billboard.
