Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzzii Dorleus.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Suzzii. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my photography journey in Orlando, FL. At first, I was just using photography as an outlet for my emotions. It soon bloomed into a beautiful passion, which then turned into a way to support myself. I realized that I had a natural knack for the craft and pretty much ran with it all the way to Denver.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been the smoothest of roads– but I’m used to the bumps. They’re kind of fun. At first, I struggled to accept that I didn’t have the means to get the nicer lenses, so I was stuck with my starter lens. I eventually got pretty good at what I did, and my clients always loved the experience. I realize that the lens doesn’t make the photographer. I actually had a solid group of women creatives behind me who helped me stay on my path despite tricky algorithms. I connected with a ton of young women who were wanting to model & do photography. I thought, “What a time to be alive!”
What should we know about Suzzii D. Visuals? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m currently a photographer who’s trying to dive into the videography world. It started off with a passion for creating YouTube videos at 11 years old. I’m usually introduced as a photographer, but I model too!
I’m most proud of the progress I was able to make in two short years. I gained a lot of confidence and that bled into my life outside of photography. I believe my disability sets me apart from others. Even though it’s physically taxing for me to be a photographer, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I believe the biggest barrier today is the lack of opportunity for women to shine in a male-dominated field. There are many extremely talented young women out there who are hungry and ready to eat. It’s unfortunate that it’s intimidating to be in a field that’s mostly dominated by men, but it just makes me hungrier at the end of the day.
