Today we’d like to introduce you to Tennille Wood.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After following “practical advice” that led to a business degree and an unfulfilling career in Bio-tech, I followed my true passion for Interior Design. I left Colorado and studied Interior Design at the Chelsea School of Art & Design in London, UK. A few years later, I had launched Beautiful Habitat Interior Design, then returned to Denver in 2007.
I went into design because I enjoyed color and pattern and making spaces beautiful. My design education opened a second passion in me – that of highly functional spaces. I love to solve a problem. I love to create efficiency. Taking a room that frustrates a client and transforming it into a space that supports the activities they need to complete each day brings me as much satisfaction as the color and pattern we layer on. These practical solutions have won my firm several design awards in the last ten years.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I returned to Colorado with a brand new Interior Design firm just as we headed into a major recession. A lot of Interior Design firms closed their doors between 2008-2012. I believe that I not only survived but thrived, through those years because I didn’t have experience with the pre-recession home market. I built my business with the economy at the time. I learned how to bring very high value and boutique -level service to my clients during the lean years and that became a core tenant of the business 13 years later.
I think there are two big struggles entrepreneurs. The first is finding your own way. We are inundated with podcasts, books, business coaches, gurus, and well-meaning friends, all of whom tell us what we “should” be doing in our business. But each business and business owner have a different mind and passion and your own mind and passion will take you on your own, perfect path if you trust it.
The second struggle is how to charge for our services or end product. This one is especially hard for creatives and women. We struggle to own and claim our value in this world, especially when we put our heart into creative projects. My advice for overcoming this is to inventory the value that you bring to your clients. Do you make their lives easier, save them time and mistakes, bring them joy? These should be factored into your pricing above and beyond the “thing” you provide.
What should we know about Beautiful Habitat Interior Design? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
For thirteen years, I’ve been transforming spaces across Colorado into beautiful habitats. With an eye for unexpected– but uniquely balanced– colors, patterns, and texture and a vision to draw-out a rooms hidden function, I strive to leave my clients living in style and comfort.
After studying interior design in London, I fell in love with the way history informs contemporary life. My work combines classic European design juxtaposed with the casual airy feel of my western roots and my personal sense of eclectic adventure. I love to fuse dynamic style and color, mix contemporary art with antique furnishings, and conjure the perfect mood with unexpected patterns.
Our portfolio includes a wide range of projects: from reimagining new construction to bringing turn of the century farmhouses into the modern age. I’ve devised designs for urban duplexes, refreshed suburban homes for growing families, created spaces for Denver’s equally expanding active adult population– and just about everything else in between.
I am proud of our high level of repeat and referral customers. When clients return or refer to us, we know we are making the experience of working with us as special as the rooms we design.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
Time is Luxury. Anyone that can offer a solution to give their clients back more time and freedom in their day has an incredible business opportunity.
