Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Samuel.
Vanessa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had a passion for learning about the way things worked and beauty/fashion. It is one of those things where you can’t really explain why you love something, you just do! I went to college for Electrical Engineering and after graduating, I traveled and realized that I wanted to dive into the fashion world. When I returned to Denver, I ended up getting involved with a lot of the Denver local magazines for their fashion sections while working as an Electrical Engineer. I did that for several years while coming up with ideas for blogging. I started Vanessaland in 2017 which is a blog about women in STEM, Fashion and life. Currently, I am working on really combining tech and fashion as that is where our future is headed.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Most of the time, it’s a lot of figuring things out and making mistakes along the way. With entrepreneurship, it seems like a constant game of trial and error but that is ok because you will learn from every single decision you make, especially the failed ones. Therefore, my advice would be to start implementing your ideas as they come and do not wait for the “perfect” opportunity. If you’re waiting for perfect, you will never begin.
What should we know about VANESSALAND? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am an Electrical Engineer by day who specializes in power systems. Basically, I am one of the engineers that are responsible for powering homes and cities. I work on large projects called power plants which are essentially assembly lines for converting different forms of energy into electricity. That electricity is then used to power homes and cities. By night, is when I work on my business, combining my knowledge of circuits and fiber science to merge it with fashion. I am in the research phase of figuring out different materials and fibers that can be used within fabrics to benefit human skin. I believe that the combination of engineering and fashion sets me apart. I am most proud when I learn something new or get closer to my goal!
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Everything is temporary and you ARE in control of your life.
