Conversations with the Inspiring Xin Zheng

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xin Zheng.

Xin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have a strong connection with documenting memory since I was a toddler. My grandfather took tons of photos of me wherever we went together until one day, suddenly, he could not remember who I am. I got my first camera from my father. It is the wedding gift though I did not even have a wedding ceremony. Every girl dreams about their weddings. I don’t have one on that day but I have it every day. Like many, I picked up the camera because of the love for my husband and our growing family. And that is the start of our journey. I held my little one in one arm with two cameras on the other, She had a lot of fun doing nature hunting while I was capturing every precious moment I want to remember. Then, some friends and neighbors came to me and stayed with me for their family portraits year by year. Right now, I practice film camera a lot as I can pull out the memory with my grandfather in every loud click sound and the imperfection of real life that film camera negatives in. I think that is also the approach I want to take in creating my photography style, perfect imperfection of real life.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nope. In the beginning, I was very shy about calling myself a photographer and promoting in social media. Most of the time, I just grab my family to practice and had very limited experience to work with others. But there is one chance that changes my perspective. I was hired by my friend to take pictures of her business of yoga. She actually was taking a roller coaster of her life but nothing stops her. She wants to build a community for more moms by practicing yoga. After that session, I really feel being shy is not helpful to myself or others. Maybe I also can help others and make a difference by stepping out of my comfort zone. So, I just embarked on a project to capture stories of artists, designers who are also moms like you and me. As moms, we all have struggles that for some angle, are the beauty of life but also may swallow us as humans. Through those stories, I hope they can inspire more moms to breathe, realize and get together. Moms deserve that.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Xin & Xin Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialize in family portrait but not limited to. Before I launched my project of capturing stories behind that beautiful art, designs that are made by moms, I also pushed myself to learn flat styling in order to provide more beautiful details about that art, deigns. My journey of photography will be unstoppable which is the mission I am fulfilling also the proudest of.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
I think they are ordinary but brave moms around ourselves. Because they are real and have so much more to share than the ones we usually read about in magazines.
