Conversations with Iris Delany

Today we’d like to introduce you to Iris Delany.

Hi Iris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Iris Delany and I am a 21-year-old transgender artist and photographer. I’ve always had a passion for filming videos and taking pictures. Ever since I got my hands on a disposable camera, I’ve captured moments in which would make me feel an emotion. I’ve always connected with photography because it was the only thing that kept me in the present moment in times my thoughts may have been too loud.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. HELL NO! Hahahaha. It has not been a smooth road. I joke with my friends all the time that a reality TV show moment needs to happen because of how successful it would be. Once I came out as trans, over a year ago, I began living a completely different life. I had to re-evaluate the relationships, people, and energy that I allowed to be in my space. My parents and the majority of my family decided not to carry on a relationship with me after my transition. I am an independent artist supporting myself in Downtown Denver which comes with it’s own set of trials and tribulations, but I am grateful for my experiences. They inspire the art I create every single day.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in portrait photography and multimedia art (graphic/web design). I am known for the stories that I bring out of people while taking their photographs or my own. Freedom of expression is a privilege that I want to provide a space for to everyone who I take pictures of. My art is inspired by other art. Being a transgender artist, it’s essential for me to relay my experience in every project I am apart of. When I am creating, I am healing. You can see that from every step of my photo process, I am passionate and well-educated.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
A lot of people still don’t know I am an art school dropout. Oops. I, unfortunately, had to drop out of school due to a poor financial situation and the global pandemic. However, no matter what I am still passionate about creating and learning more every day.
