Conversations with Jesse Neal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Neal.

Hi Jesse, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
For me, I have always loved designing and creating new pieces, no matter what the medium is. I seek it out on a daily basis and love to see what I can create and what interesting color combinations. I’ve long had a passion for trying to see how to convey a message in the least amount of design elements. It’s harder than it sounds and it is a really good exercise for us designers. For me, I’m a bit of a perfectionist and focus on details very much from the smallest tasks to the largest. I think for me, I’ve had luck in finding people who are also passionate about what they do and I can help them carry that passion into how they and or their business is portrayed too. When I first got into design, I never would have imagined I would be doing marketing and branding. I started with doing illustration and typography but slowly as time went on found out I had a real knack for branding.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Truthfully any road to success is never a smooth ride, and honestly, I enjoy it that way. I’ve definitely had some hard times working for myself and starting my business. All the obstacles and challenges, looking back, are my favorite parts of my journey. I’ve learned so much from all my failures and hardships. They were definitely months where I had 0 clients and no income from my business, and that’s a tough pill to swallow starting out. But working through that and overcoming it is more rewarding and fulfilling than anything. Also, trying to explain my business to family and friends has been challenging haha. That brings up one of my bigger challenges, too, as a freelance designer explains why it’s so worth it to use a designer instead of vista print or something else like that. Showing examples and explaining the value has been a great experience and a real learning experience.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a freelance graphic designer and I specialize in branding and logo work. So primarily, my function is to explain already established businesses or brand new businesses redo their own existing logo and brand guidelines or to create brand new ones and help them create a cohesive and clean brand. A lot of thought goes into establishing and well recognized and loved brand. There are tons of elements to consider, such as target audience, budget, the scale of business, the market of business, competition, the influence of business and etc. I am very proud of the work I do, and I thoroughly enjoy helping businesses and people achieve the goals they want from their businesses and how they are perceived. I think one of the biggest things that I think sets me apart from a lot of other freelance designers as I have studied, and continue to do so, marketing and marketing trends. This really helps me establish quality and thoughtful brands for companies.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was always very interested in art and things of that nature growing up. I was kind of a weird kid haha, but happy. I was an only child growing up, so I learned early on how to enjoy my own company and entertain myself as most only children do, haha. Funny enough, when I was a kid, I always wanted to be an entomologist, which is the study of bugs, and was always fascinated with the insect world. I still am, haha.
