Daniel Forster

Hi Daniel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
From an early age, I was drawn to creativity, yet opportunities to embrace and explore it were rare. Life, as it does, steered me along a different path, and for many years, my desire to create remained just a whisper in the back of my mind. It wasn’t until about five years ago that circumstances aligned, granting me the time and opportunity to rekindle this passion. Photography, a long-held interest, became the medium through which I began to explore this renewed creative drive.

The majestic landscapes of Colorado served as the perfect canvas for my artistic exploration. With a camera in hand and an explorer’s heart, I ventured into the vast and varied terrains of this beautiful region. It was a revelation to discover how much I enjoyed capturing moments and sceneries and crafting images that resonated so deeply with others. Gradually, my photography evolved from a hobby to something more, as people began to display my work on their walls, showing their appreciation for its artistic quality.

This unexpected twist in my journey has been nothing short of a blessing. Over the years, as I traversed through the many stunning parts of Colorado, my photography skills have not only sharpened but also garnered some acclaim. The sale of fine art prints and calendars to a growing base of thousands of customers was a milestone I had never anticipated, yet it stands as a testament to the positive reception my work has received.

Perhaps one of the most fulfilling aspects of this journey has been my involvement with the Colorful Colorado Collective. A couple of years ago, I was honored with the opportunity to co-lead many photography workshops, a platform that allowed me to share my knowledge and passion with fellow photography enthusiasts. Together, we have delved deeper into the craft, exploring the nooks and crannies of Colorado and capturing its essence. The experience of connecting with and aiding others in their photographic pursuits has been very gratifying. It’s more than just teaching skills; it’s about fostering a community of artists united by a common pursuit.

As I move forward, my enjoyment and satisfaction in photography, along with the relationships it has helped me build, stay as key motivators in my journey. What began as a renewed interest has grown into a deep passion for capturing moments, continually influencing my life in many positive ways.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the most enduring challenges I face as a creative professional is establishing a sustainable income model. While creating fine art prints and traveling for photography are deeply fulfilling, they do not inherently constitute a business model. These activities need to be financially viable to be sustainable. There’s always the option of returning to a more traditional corporate role and relegating photography to a hobby, but that path, while secure, lacks the fulfillment and excitement I find in my creative work.

To address this, I’ve explored various avenues to monetize my passion. I’ve successfully sold fine art prints across different mediums, both online and in multiple physical locations. This has not only allowed me to reach a wider audience but also to understand the market dynamics better. Additionally, leading photography workshops and offering online mentoring have been instrumental in building a business model around my expertise. These activities have not only provided a source of income but have also helped me connect with others who find value in my work and seek my guidance on their creative journeys.

Each step of this journey has been a learning experience, teaching me the importance of flexibility, innovation, and persistence in the world of creative professions. The challenges are ongoing, but they are also what makes this path uniquely rewarding.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m grateful that the work I’m most known for also happens to be what I enjoy the most.

My specialization in summer wildflower and fall colors landscape photography has garnered the most popularity. There’s something incredibly rewarding about exploring the Colorado mountains and capturing their breathtaking scenery at these specific times of the year. My approach to these landscapes isn’t just about the technical aspect of photography; it’s about conveying a story, a feeling, or a moment in time that resonates with the viewer.

Another aspect of my work that brings me great joy is night sky photography. Staying out late to capture the stars has become something I enjoy doing. It requires patience and skill, but the results are always worth it. This facet of my work allows me to explore and share the beauty of the universe in a way that many don’t often get to see.

One thing I’m particularly proud of is having my work published multiple times and on the cover of Landscape Photography Magazine. Additionally, I have been voted “Best of the Springs” Silver medalist by the readers of Colorado Springs Gazette. These milestones have been affirming, but what truly sets me apart is my dedication to not just capturing an image, but to telling a story through my lens. Each photograph is a piece of a larger narrative about our natural world, and I strive to make each one unique and emotive.

Photography is not just a job for me; it’s a journey of exploration and sharing the world’s hidden wonders through my eyes. Every image is a personal reflection of my passion and a testament to the beauty that surrounds us.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Building a supportive network of friends and colleagues has been pivotal in navigating the often challenging world of photography. In this business, one frequently encounters naysayers and critical opinions. These voices can be particularly influential and distracting for artists on their creative journey. I’ve found lots of value in surrounding myself with individuals who are not only supportive but also genuinely invested in the success of my work.

My advice to anyone seeking a mentor or looking to expand their network is to maintain a balance between being open to new relationships and exercising caution. This balance isn’t always easy to achieve, but it’s crucial for healthy professional and personal growth. Most of my connections in the photography industry have arisen from happenstance encounters. Each connection was forged because I was approachable and receptive to new relationships, yet I also remained discerning about the people I allowed into my close network.

I think serendipitous meetings often lead to the most fruitful relationships, so always keep an open mind and heart, but also trust your instincts when it comes to building your support system.
