Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Rueda.
Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a recent graduate of the University of New Mexico (UNM) with a bachelor’s in art history. I have worked diligently throughout my years at UNM to gain understanding of art history, museum studies, and art business. My previous mentor Federico Vigil, who is a world renowned fresco artist, taught me the beautiful techniques of Fresco. Working with him, I gained experience in art studio practices, mural art, and art talks. As an art history student and artist in 2021, I had the opportunity to intern at the Judy Chicago art space: Through the Flower, where I did research and archiving while also helping with tours of the art space and managing clientele. I also helped prepare one of Judy Chicago’s smoke pieces that she did in Belen, New Mexico 2021. In 2018-2019, I volunteered in a successful art gallery in Albuquerque, New Mexico under the mentorship of Jennifer DeSantis, who extensively shared her knowledge of curation and business. I assisted in setting up art shows for local artists. I gained knowledge communicating with artists and how to achieve their vision in displaying their works of arts, how to engage with the audience and inform them about the featured artist, and curatorial training. In 2019 Jennifer sponsored my first art show, which was a great success and kickstarted my self-representation in the art business, but also whetted my appetite to gain a deeper knowledge of the art industry.
My passion for art began at the young age of eleven, and since then, I have intensely studied the world of art and its great masters. I have been fortunate to have traveled through Italy, Spain and Mexico which has exposed me to their incredible art and expanded my worldview of different cultures and traditions. This stimulated my study of different creative techniques and their application to my own artwork, my range of media includes drawing, sculpting, painting, and digital/film photography. My aspiration for my future is to become an expert in Native American, Latin American Arts, and Eastern Asian arts. I believe that being exposed to other cultures gives way to traveling to those countries and creating the opportunity to learn from the perspective of the artist. My passion manifests itself when I am learning while being creative and this career field is perfect for me in every way because it is a constant study of creative people. I desire to travel for work and to help set up successful galleries/museums for artists and myself.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t really think anything is smooth in life, or it would be boring. A lot of my struggles or challenges happens from within, and miscommunication through text, and emails that can be simply solved via phone call or in-person conversations.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an artist, I have trained in traditional Buon Fresco, oil, acrylic, watercolor, 3-D sculpting, whatever I can get my hands on. I primarily work with oil. I am most proud of the Fresco that I finished but also just of my journey in general, the growth, and the people I have met and will meet.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Buying my art is a great way to support, commissioning me to make your art, sharing my info with others, and word of mouth works great in any small business.
