Today we’d like to introduce you to R.R. Noall.
Hi R.R., thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always knew I wanted to be a writer, but I’d been told many times that it was no way to make a living. Five years ago, I abandoned another career path and started sharing my poetry online. Simultaneously, I launched a freelance writing and marketing business. If we fast-forward to the present day, I am a Denver typewriter poet, editor of a literary magazine, From Whispers to Roars, and my third poetry collection, AT WAR WITH STARS, is being released on 10-31-20.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The generations before ours do not view creative pursuits as viable. It took a lot of hard work to prove to my loved ones, that it was. That being said, the trope of the “starving artist” is a thing of the past. Now more than ever, there are ways to put your creative work online, build a name for yourself, and sell art.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a writer. Online, I’m most known for my poetry, though I have published some nonfiction as well. As a student of poetry, I work hard to make sure I am comfortable with many different forms. At the same time, I love bringing my typewriter to events and writing on-the-spot poetry for passersby. This kind of creative collaboration is something I am proud to bring to others. Additionally, I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community. I feel humbled to give a poetic voice to that community and provide much-needed representation to others.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I am constantly thinking of new ways to engage other writers. During COVID, I opened submissions for From Whispers to Roars for a multi-week series titled, Quarantine Tales. What do part-time writers do during a crisis? Write of course! As the editor, I was constantly in awe of what others produce. I am so glad the magazine is able to provide a welcoming platform when everything else in the world feels chaotic and unstable.
