Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Oyler.
Hi Samantha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up helping my mom run her computer training business after she took it over, so I saw how much work it takes to run a business. I never planned to start one myself. I planned to stay home with my son. When I found out I’d be losing the Medicaid waiver that allowed me to be his paid caregiver, I had to figure out another way to support us from home. Writing was the one thing I could do at 2 a.m., which worked out because my autistic son strongly disagrees with the concept of sleep. Those nights turned into my first book, Nursery Crimes: No Rest for the Wicked. Since January I’ve published three books, with another coming soon, and after struggling through the publishing process myself and republishing a few times to fix small mistakes, I started helping other authors get their books published too.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’m still very new to all of this, so a big challenge has been confidence. Putting yourself out there, talking to strangers, and learning to value your own work doesn’t come naturally to me. I also do everything myself while managing life at home. My son has autism and receives about 30 hours of ABA therapy at home each week, so I usually work while his therapist is here. It’s a constant balancing act, but I’ve gotten good at working in small pockets of time and figuring things out as I go!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a writer and creative who focuses on honest, practical content about neurodivergence, overstimulation, parenting, and mental overload. My work is for people whose brains don’t always cooperate with the world around them. I try to write the things people are often thinking but rarely see said out loud.
Since January I’ve published several books and I’m continuing to build out my Overstimulated series along with other projects. I’m known for writing in a very direct, unfiltered way about things like parenting while overstimulated, burnout, and trying to function when your brain feels like it’s actively working against you.
What I’m most proud of is creating work that makes people feel understood. A lot of advice assumes everyone’s brain works the same way. Mine doesn’t, and neither do many of my readers’. I write for the people who feel like the world was designed with a different operating system than the one they were given.
What’s next?
Right now my main focus is continuing to write and expand the books I’ve started. I’m working on adding more to my Overstimulated series and publishing new books that focus on real-life situations people deal with but don’t always see talked about honestly. I’m also working on a book of AI prompts designed to help writers brainstorm ideas, outline projects, and get past writer’s block.
I’m also continuing to help other writers publish their own books after learning the process myself, mostly through trial and error. I’m still early in all of this, so a lot of my plans are simply to keep building, keep writing, and see where it goes.
