Exploring Life & Business with Megi Gabunia of M.G. MEGI GABUNIA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megi Gabunia

Hi Megi, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The designer Megi Gabunia grew up surrounded by art, with her father, Zurab Gabunia, a renowned Georgian artist known for his evocative landscapes, working at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts. This creative environment, steeped in her father’s artistic legacy, profoundly shaped Megi’s tastes, professional path, and artistic vision.

Inspired by her father’s creativity and deep connection to Georgian culture, Megi also draws inspiration from the history and heritage of the country of Georgia. Her unique approach reimagines traditional Georgian elements, including but not limited to Georgian national and warrior clothing, with a modern and futuristic aesthetic, often incorporating black, leather, metals, and innovative materials.

M.G. Megi Gabunia has rapidly evolved into an internationally recognized, female-owned designer brand. Its swift rise to popularity can be attributed to Megi’s distinctive style, creative clothing designs, and tireless dedication to ensuring the brand’s success and global outreach. Through her unwavering commitment and artistic prowess, Megi has established a brand that stands out in the competitive world of fashion.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Megi Gabunia’s journey in fashion design has been marked by significant challenges. Starting a brand from scratch in Georgia, a country with limited opportunities for showcasing fashion, presented a formidable obstacle. Despite these constraints, Megi persevered, working tirelessly to establish her unique vision in the fashion world.

A particularly demanding aspect of her career has been her work in costume design for films. Megi has contributed to 10 movies, including historical productions that required creating authentic period clothing and warrior gear entirely from scratch. This process involved extensive research and meticulous craftsmanship, especially when crafting intricate items like armor. Regardless of the complexity, Megi consistently delivered exceptional work that enhanced the authenticity and visual appeal of these productions.

Balancing her film work with developing her own brand posed another significant challenge. However, this dual focus also enriched her design perspective, infusing her brand with a unique blend of historical inspiration and contemporary style.

Despite the challenges of operating from Georgia, Megi has successfully taken her brand to the international stage. She has presented her collections at numerous exhibitions and fashion shows across the globe, including but not limited to the United States (New York, California, North Carolina, New Jersey, Colorado), Italy, Germany, and of course, Georgia. These international showcases posed their own set of logistical and cultural challenges, but Megi’s dedication and the strength of her designs allowed her to overcome these hurdles, garnering recognition and acclaim in diverse markets.

Running a fashion brand in Georgia comes with its own set of difficulties, from sourcing materials to finding skilled personnel. Yet, Megi has turned these challenges into opportunities, leveraging resources to create truly distinctive pieces that reflect both her artistic vision, personal style, and her cultural heritage.

Her ability to navigate both local and international fashion scenes and never stop striving toward the brand’s continued success has been crucial to her brand’s growing prominence and reputation.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My work is a fusion of Georgian cultural heritage and modern fashion, reimagining traditional elements through a contemporary perspective. I create unique, handcrafted pieces that blend historical inspiration with futuristic aesthetic, often featuring bold materials like leather and innovative fabrics. My designs reflect both my artistic vision and my commitment to showcasing Georgian culture on the global fashion stage.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Unlike many fashion designers who focus solely on creating designs, Megi Gabunia is hands-on in creating every piece from scratch.
