Exploring Life & Business with Ron Michaels of Ron Michaels Weddings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Michaels.

Hi Ron, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been living in Colorado since 1992. Business-wise I’m a self-employed full-time Wedding DJ / MC / Officiant serving the entire Front Range area. I’m also a part-time athlete and adventurer enjoying and competing in various events over the last 30 years. In addition, I also love to inspire folks to get outdoors with my monthly adventures on my R.O.A.M. blog (Ron’s Outdoor Adventure Of The Month).

I’m involved in fund raising for NoCo Humane which helps homeless pets in Northern Colorado and beyond. In addition, my wife and I had a clothing drive for a great local organization, Clothes To Kids Denver, a decade ago (see photo). This has blossomed into our Clothes For Kids World Tour where we’ve collected hundreds of pounds of used clothes and personally delivered them to organizations around the world on four continents. Next stop is July at the German Clothing Foundation in Berlin benefitting eastern European & Ukraine.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are always ups and downs…as well as challenges in any business. Being self-employed, you can really never ease up. My #1 suggestion to new entrepreneurs is to network and become friends with your competition. This is hard for many people. Too many business owners (especially in the wedding industry) prefer to go it alone and look at others in their industry as competitors. I regularly have lunch with five of the top wedding DJs in the Denver / Front Range area and we’re all good friends and help each other out. You can’t spell the word network without the word “WORK”. Business owners need to get out there and meet other professionals and attend conferences and workshops to keep up on the latest. Like the saying goes, “if you ain’t learnin’, you ain’t earnin'”

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Ron Michaels Weddings?
I’m a Full-time Wedding DJ/MC, but it didn’t start out that way. At first, I would take almost any event from bars, clubs, and karaoke, to schools, and corporate. About 10 years in, I realized that these events just weren’t making me happy. Weddings were my passion and for the last 20 years, they’ve been 100% of my business. Plus…there are plenty of other great DJs in Colorado that love those other types of events and I’m more than happy to refer them on the rare occasion I still get an inquiry for a company Christmas Party. Over the last decade I’ve also incorporated officiating wedding ceremonies as well, which I absolutely love and will someday do solely when I hang up my headphones and retire. Until then, I’m gonna keep rocking Colorado weddings.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I love podcasts. I listen to at least one a day. On the DJ / Wedding side, Alan Berg’s Wedding Solutions podcast and Disc Jockey News are probably my faves. Others include Rick Steves Travel and Drew Binsky on the travel side, any podcast about cycling, running, or outdoor adventure. I’m also a Colorado Rockies fan (don’t hold that against me) and I love the Locked On Rockies podcast.
