Hidden Gems: Meet Christina Straw of Christina Straw Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Straw.

Hi Christina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I had worked in communications/marketing for tech companies in California for about ten years when I started feeling burnt out. I wanted something more creatively challenging and decided to pursue a degree in photography and attended the Academy of Art in San Francisco. I was a full-time student for 2 years before my husband and I welcomed a son in 2009. I knew then I wanted to focus on capturing families and children and thus Christina Straw Photography was born.

My family and I (my daughter was born in 2014) relocated to Colorado from California four years ago and I consider myself lucky to have such beautiful backdrops for photographing my clients.

My style is a natural, candid approach to photographing families – I want that spontaneous giggle, the warm hug, and the tender look a mother gives her child. I’m so thankful I get to do something creatively fulfilling and love seeing my client’s children grow up before my lens.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a pretty smooth road, luckily. What’s important to me is I want to continue to improve and evolve in my work. I’ve been mentored by some of the best in the business and I’m constantly looking to other photographers for inspiration.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Christina Straw Photography?
I started my business in 2009 after the birth of my first child. I’m known for a candid, natural approach to photographing families and children in beautiful outdoor locations.

What sets me apart is I take a great deal of care with each client from start to finish – to getting to know the client, advising them on the best clothing to wear, creating custom pose boards, and working with them on printing and framing my work for their homes.

I’m proud that I’m one of the highest-rated family photographers in Centennial, CO according to Yelp, and that I have a number of repeat clients who trust me with their family pictures year after year.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I love to read, travel and spend time with my family. There’s nothing better than an iced vanilla latte and a great mystery novel or memoir. My family and I love to go on adventures and explore new places!
