Hi Devon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My father was an attorney, and my mom has worked for an estate attorney for nearly 30 years. I’m a Colorado native, born and raised in Fort Collins.
The last few years have thrown some curveballs my way. In the span of about 1,000 days, I lost four family members. The hardest hit came a week before Christmas, when I was at home finishing a gag gift for my little brother—something I’d been planning all year. It was going to be hilarious. The phone rang. It was my mom, telling me my little brother was gone. He’d ended his life.
My brother was funny, brilliant, and deeply missed. His death shook my world. In the months that followed, I found myself dealing not only with grief, but had a front row seat to the financial, legal, and logistical chaos that can come with death. I learned firsthand how hard it is to get through even simple tasks when you’re running on what I now know as “Grief Brain.” It’s a real thing—you’re at half-capacity, if that.
It struck me as odd that we expect people to navigate the complex administration of death when they’re grieving and have never done it before. And the stakes are high: if you miss a deadline or don’t handle things improperly, the consequences can be severe.
So why isn’t this kind of information readily available? And where can people go to get help with it when they’re simply too overwhelmed to deal with it?
